Tips for finding the right Technician!
Today's vehicles are not what they used to be. It takes a Professional Technician to properly diagnose and repair the vehicle of today. Even vehicles of the 90s and 2000s are far more advanced than most people give credit for and require a professional technician to repair. However, unlike the medical field or many other professions there are very little requirements to become a technician. Because of this no mechanic is the same and your experience can very greatly from shop to shop.
Tip #1
Ask around. Look at reviews, ask family members or friends.
Tip #2
Look at the shop. Being a mechanic is not exactly clean work but good technicians do their best to keep an clean and organized shop.
Tip #3
There is no such thing as an all knowing technician. If a shop does not charge you for Diagnosis they are just guessing and unless the problem is obvious they likely will not make the correct repair.
Tip #4
Pricing. A good shop generally will not be the cheapest. But they will give you a detailed written estimate prior to beginning any work. Ask questions about the service, a shop should have no problem explaining what needs to be done and why.
Tip #5
Ask about the technician, wether you are talking to the technician themselves or a service writer. Ask about their experience. How long have they been a technician? Where did they go to school, are they ASE certified (Automotive Service Excellence). The automotive industry is a ever changing industry ASE certified mechanics are required to keep up with the new technology in order to keep the certification. To myself, it is very important that a technician is always willing to learn and better themselves.
Tip #6
Specialization. While this is not the most important each vehicle manufacturer can be very different in how a vehicle is constructed and should be serviced. Depending on the repair that needs to be performed it can be better to seek out a shop that specializes in your vehicle make.
