C12 with unknown repair history and 800k on the odometer needed some love. Whoever had the gear housing off last obviously didn’t know what a torque wrench was. So now we are starting fresh with a complete overhaul. Can’t wait to see this thing back on the road!

This 1987 cummins L10 was quite the learning curve. Customer complained of heavy black smoke. After checking and adjusting valve lash per the manual, the black smoke symptom went away but we ended up with a constant white haze “raw fuel”. After further inspection we found cut injector o-rings and debris in the inlet screens which was corrected. Thanks to the help of a few previous coworkers and some seasoned veterans from the era, we learned that pre 1994 cummins used the inner base circle method for valve sets. This was my first time seeing the attached procedure. Long story long, it’s back up and running like it should be.
