A Little Behind-the-Scenes on This Mercedes 420SEL Build…

Fabricating speaker enclosures for a 1990 Mercedes-Benz 420SEL is anything but straightforward. Even at nearly 37 years old, this car remains a testament to Mercedes engineering, and anyone who has worked on one knows they didn’t leave much room for modifications.

The goal for this project is the installation of an ultra-premium Musway audio system. On paper, it sounds simple enough. In reality, premium speakers come with premium-sized components, and fitting them into factory locations that were already tightly engineered requires a thorough understanding of what each speaker needs to accomplish and how to make it happen without compromising the vehicle.

What makes this project especially challenging is that many of the original interior and mounting components are 37 years old, difficult to source, and in some cases impossible to replace. Every cut, modification, and fabrication step must be carefully planned and executed.

Mercedes’ original audio engineers did an impressive job for their era, and many aspects of their design are still impressive by today’s standards. My task has been to work within those constraints by modifying and fabricating new speaker mounting systems that integrate seamlessly with the vehicle’s original design while remaining completely unnoticed when finished.

This isn’t the kind of fabrication that allows for large margins of error. It’s precision work, requiring patience, finesse, and careful consideration of every millimeter.

Next up is a vintage ’91 big-body Benz, and preserving its originality is a must. That means no cutting, no touchscreen radios, and no modern-looking upgrades.

Instead, we’re using a Continental TR7412UB-OR, which keeps the classic Euro look while adding Bluetooth and USB functionality.

Before building the system, I needed to verify exactly what the Continental radio’s internal amplifier was delivering. Using my AudioControl DM-RTA, I confirmed a clean, full-range signal and tested for clipping with 1 kHz and 50 Hz tones. The signal begins clipping at volumes 38-40, but with the fader moved one click to the rear, the signal remains completely clean all the way to max volume.

That means the customer can use the full volume range without distortion, and I can set the DSP amplifier gains using a verified unclipped signal.

Small details like this are what separate a basic install from a properly engineered system.

Some vehicles come in for a simple radio upgrade.
Others show up looking like they’ve survived years of dune runs, mountain trails, rough roads, and off-road adventures.

This lifted Chevy 4x4 conversion van came all the way from New Jersey after the owner personally stopped by the shop and told me, “YOU have to build my sound system.”

Challenge accepted. 😎

What started as an audio upgrade quickly turned into a complete restoration of the van’s electrical and audio infrastructure.

Before a single piece of equipment could go in, years of modifications and hard use had to be addressed. The dashboard required dropping the steering column just to gain proper access. Old wiring had to be removed and reorganized. Factory conversion speaker grilles were restricting sound quality and needed modification. The headliner had suffered from years of bouncing over rough terrain and required custom solutions to secure it back into place.

Then it was time to move underneath.
A second battery system that had endured over a decade of off-road abuse needed attention. I redesigned the dual-battery wiring, serviced existing fuse protection, added additional safety fusing for both the secondary battery and new amplifier, repaired exterior electrical systems, serviced high-performance LED lighting, and even ordered and installed a missing OEM battery tie-down because doing the job right means addressing everything, not just what’s easy to see.
This project had a lot of moving pieces, but every one of them mattered.

The finished system includes:
✅ Sony XAV-AX6000 touchscreen receiver with steering wheel control integration
✅ Musway FIVE.100+ amplifier
✅ Kicker KS 6x9 ceiling speakers
✅ Kicker Reflex 12” utility-grade subwoofer
✅Kicker KS 6.75” component speakers with silk dome tweeters, crossovers for the front door stage
✅Kicker KS 4x6 mid-ship speakers
✅ 66 feet of new speaker wire routed throughout the vehicle
✅ Interior and exterior electrical servicing
✅ Instrument cluster lighting restoration

Finally, everything was wired, secured, tested, and ready for tuning.

Or so I thought.

After setting gains and crossovers with my RTA equipment, something still wasn’t right. Most people would never have noticed. I did.

The system sounded good.

I wanted it to sound exceptional.

After revisiting the front woofer mounting location, I redesigned the mounting structure to increase rigidity in the conversion door panels. The result?

💥 Midbass returned. 💥 Sub bass came alive. 💥 Clarity and control were restored. 💥 Full-volume performance finally matched what the equipment was capable of delivering.

Now this beast is ready to blast across the beach, crawl mountain roads, conquer desert trails, and soundtrack every adventure along the way.
Because at Blossom Installations, we’re not paid to install equipment.

If I had to pick one modern vehicle safety feature that I absolutely love, Blind Spot Detection would be near the top of the list.

It’s one of those technologies you don’t realize how much you rely on until you’ve experienced it.

The good news? You don’t have to buy a new vehicle to get it. The Brandmotion RDBS-1600 brings OEM-level blind spot monitoring to vehicles that weren’t originally equipped with the feature. Using radar-based speed detection and premium sensors, it dramatically reduces the nuisance alerts often associated with cheaper systems.

Even better, it adds Cross Traffic Detection while backing out of parking spaces, giving you another set of eyes where you need them most.

Every Install Matters.

Not every vehicle that comes through our shop gets a full DSP-powered audio system.

Sometimes, it's about making smart upgrades that deliver the biggest improvement for the customer.

This 2018 Ram 1500 came equipped with the factory six-speaker audio system. For the front stage, we selected a set of Kicker KSS269 component speakers, utilizing the factory 6x9 location along with the matching 2.75" mid/tweeter. By choosing components that match the original speaker sizes, we achieve premium sound quality without unnecessary installation costs.
But quality parts alone don't create quality results.
Every Blossom installation begins with a complete installation plan. In this case, that meant properly soldering connectors to each crossover, securely mounting the crossovers, and ensuring all wiring and connections were protected from vibration and movement. The details matter because preventing rattles and unwanted noise helps preserve the clean, crisp sound these speakers are designed to produce.

To complement the front stage, a matching set of Kicker KS Series coaxial speakers was installed in the rear doors, providing smooth rear fill and a balanced listening experience throughout the cabin.

Whether it's a full custom audio build or a speaker upgrade, every vehicle receives the same attention to detail, craftsmanship, and care.

Big job or small job, the standard never changes.

The second half of this 2023 Road Glide upgrade is officially dialed in — and now this bike is delivering the kind of sound only a fully engineered system can produce. The new Soundstream Reserve V2 touchscreen is installed and synced perfectly with Maestro RR2 integration, giving the rider modern control, factory feature retention, and a clean OEM‑level interface.

Before tuning began, the audio input signal was verified clean all the way to full volume — no distortion, no noise, just a perfect source signal feeding the system. From there, the high‑power KICKER amp was gain‑set on the oscilloscope with absolute precision, ensuring maximum clean output and rock‑solid reliability.

Final‑stage highlights:
