Dr. Gerald Wannarka “Jerry”, a cherished member of the SCCA for more than 50 years and Lone Star Region member for much of that time, passed away on March 20, 2026 after a lifetime of contribution, mentorship, and inspiration.

Jerry joined the SCCA in 1966 and earned his competition license in 1968, beginning a 40-year driving career that reflected his deep love of the sport. From his early days behind the wheel of an Alfa Romeo to later racing Datsuns, Nissans, and Hondas, Jerry’s enthusiasm for competition never wavered.

Wanting to help the clubs in more ways than one, Jerry entered the stewards program, which he continued to participate in for the rest of his life. His service as a steward set a standard few could match. He held many of the Club’s most critical roles, including Chief Steward for the Runoffs, Executive Steward in both the Northeast and Southwest Divisions, and many regional steward positions. His steady leadership and commitment to fairness and safety earned him the respect of competitors and officials alike.

At the national level, Jerry’s influence was equally profound. He served as Area 2 Director and later as Chairman of the SCCA Board of Directors, helping guide the organization with wisdom and integrity. He also played a key role within SCCA Enterprises, serving as both Director and Chairman of its Board.

For his outstanding, long-term dedication to motorsport, Jerry received the SCCA Woolf Barnato Award in 2015, and his exemplary stewardship merited the David Morrell Award in 2018. In 2026, he was rightfully inducted into the SCCA Hall of Fame, a testament to the lasting impact of his contributions.

Jerry’s legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched, the events he helped steward, and the standards of excellence he upheld.

📣 Announcement from our Regional Executive

Hello Region Members,

After much input and discussion regarding a Lone Star Region road race for 2026, the Board made the difficult decision to not host an event next year. Cost, distance, and scheduling plus track availability has simply made it challenging to come up with a solution for the next season. Thankfully, the SowDiv schedule continues to offer multiple races in both the Houston and Texas Regions as well as the Hallett Hoosier Super Tour, pending release of the HST schedule.

We thank for giving us a great facility to host Super Tours for the past couple of years and hope we can make it back again. Their warm welcome and willingness to work with us on all of our requests has us wishing it was close enough to our region to make it our home track. But we can’t ignore the fact that the additional travel time built into a 3-day weekend was tough on both competitors and workers, who were making their own critical decisions about which races to attend.

With regard to returning to , representatives for our Board have been working with Circuit of the Americas for a future event, but again, scheduling and costs just aren’t what’s right for us at this time. Just like NOLA, we hope to make it back again.

Sincerely,
Nadja Pollard
