Aurora Ridge Gardens

Aurora Ridge Gardens A true 'Green' house, powered with renewable energy. Waste heat from our manure methane generator is captured in hot water and piped into the floor of the greenhouse, heating the root zone, providing an ideal growing environment.

End of the season, and WOW! the bounty! I have never had peppers and eggplant grow like they did this summer. Four feet tall and loaded, they flopped down and filled the rows so I could hardly walk down to pick. Slicing tomatoes were good too, but ripened early and all at once, but cherry tomatoes go in forever! Thank you to everyone who came to the stand, bought veggies and helped me eat them! Until next year.....

I always love trying new things! This is jackfruit, a relative of breadfruit. It has a slight banana flavor and crunchy texture. When the gang tried it, some loved it, some hated it. I bought a small piece of what was a giant warty green ball with skin that looked like alien lizard people. Inside is a compound flower, the edible part the petals of the flower! Inside each petal is a large 'bean' seed, which I am saving to plant in my greenhouse (of course!).

My favorite cut flower (after lilies of course). Rudbeckia 'Indian Summer', long strong stems, large bright flowers blooming all summer and cuts that last for weeks.

This might just be my best yet.

Everything weathered the cold night with a low of 57F in the greenhouse. Confession....we did burn a little propane to raise the temp 10 degrees or so. With hot water tubing in the floor, however, the air temp can be 15 degrees lower and we still get the same growth. eg. air temperature last night = 57F allowed the plants to grow as if the air temp was 72F. Not bad......?

When trimming a large limb, it is important to make a cut first on the underside of the limb. The photograph shows a prime example of why. As the limb fell, it tore a giant chunk from the trunk. If this wound is ever going to heal, which it may not, it will take many years.
