The late 2000s were such a good time for American performance. 🔥

In 2008–2009, you could walk into a dealership and choose between a 425-hp Challenger SRT8, a 500-hp supercharged Shelby GT500, a 505-hp Corvette Z06, or even a 415-hp Pontiac G8 GXP if you wanted four doors.

And they all did it completely differently.

The Challenger brought back old-school Mopar muscle with the 6.1 HEMI. The GT500 gave you a supercharged V8 with a ton of potential. The Z06 was basically America’s supercar with the 7.0L LS7. And the G8 GXP was the sleeper of the group — 6.2L LS3, available with a 6-speed manual, and room for the family. 😂

Looking back, we really didn’t know how good we had it.

This lineup really shows how different American performance cars were even when they were all chasing the same goal. 🔥

The 2019 Corvette ZR1 was basically Chevrolet going all-out with the final front-engine C7. It used the supercharged 6.2L LT5, could still be ordered with a 7-speed manual, and with the ZTK package it got the huge rear wing and serious track aero. This thing was basically America’s answer to the supercar world.

The 2020 Shelby GT500 went a completely different direction. Ford gave it the supercharged 5.2L Predator V8 and paired it exclusively with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. No manual. It was built to be insanely quick while still being capable on a road course, especially with the Carbon Fiber Track Pack.

Then you have the Challenger SRT Super Stock, which might be the most Mopar car ever made. 😂 Dodge basically took everything they learned from the Demon and made another factory drag car. Widebody, drag radials, 18-inch wheels, drag-tuned suspension and that supercharged HEMI up front. It was never trying to be the best canyon car — it wanted to destroy the quarter-mile.

And the Camaro ZL1 1LE might be the sleeper of this group. The regular ZL1 was already nasty, but the 1LE added Multimatic DSSV suspension, aggressive aero, massive sticky tires and a setup designed specifically for road-course work. The 2018 version was manual-only too, which makes it even cooler today.

Four American monsters, but four completely different personalities.

ZR1 for the supercar feel, GT500 for the all-around performance, Super Stock for the drag strip, or ZL1 1LE for the road course.

Which one are you taking?

WHY AREN’T THEY SELLING? 👀

This might be the biggest question surrounding the new Dodge Charger SIXPACK right now.

Because on paper, the car really isn’t bad. The SIXPACK S**t Pack makes 550 horsepower from the twin-turbo 3.0L Hurricane I6, comes with AWD, and it has enough performance to give the old 392 cars a serious run. Even the R/T makes 420 horsepower and 468 lb-ft of torque.

So what’s the problem?

I think Dodge has a few things working against it.

First is price. A SIXPACK R/T starts in the $50K range, and the S**t Pack climbs from there. Dodge was already throwing thousands of dollars in incentives at 2026 models this summer while 2027s started arriving at dealerships.

Then there’s the elephant in the room: no HEMI.

The Hurricane is faster and makes more power than the old 5.7 in R/T form, but a lot of people buying Chargers weren’t buying them strictly because they were the fastest thing available. They wanted the V8 sound, the personality and the whole HEMI experience. Even Car and Driver praised the new R/T’s performance while pointing out that the six-cylinder soundtrack is a major change from what Charger buyers were used to.

And honestly, I think Dodge is still trying to win back some of the people they lost when they killed the old Charger and Challenger.

The crazy part is I actually think the SIXPACK is a pretty capable car. 550HP, twin turbos, AWD and four doors should sound like a recipe Mopar people would love.

So I want to hear from you guys:

Is the problem the PRICE, the Hurricane engine, the styling… or is it simply because there’s no V8?

And if Dodge dropped a HEMI back into this exact car tomorrow, would you buy one?
