Hyundai, Kia thefts drop over 50%: study

A software update was “extremely effective” at thwarting theft tactics popularized by viral social media videos, per Highway Loss Data Institute research.

Dive Brief: A free software update being offered for Hyundai and Kia vehicles originally sold without electronic immobilizers and push-button ignition systems has cut vehicle theft rates by over half, according to a report from the Highway Loss Data Institute.
The anti-theft software upgrade launched as a service campaign for almost 4 million Hyundai and 4.5 million Kia vehicles beginning in February 2023. It was rolled out in phases through May at no charge to customers. The spike in theft claims occurred after viral videos were posted on social media during the pandemic, which showed how easy it was to steal some Hyundai and Kia models that lacked factory-installed immobilizers or push-button ignition systems.

Dive Insight: The software update helps address what had become a troubling trend for Hyundai and Kia owners: their vehicles had become among the most-commonly stolen vehicles in the past few years.

Government Recalls Car Phone Holders Because They Can Hit Drivers in the Face

You'd think that not installing anything on your steering wheel that could be thrown directly at your face during an accident is more of a no-brainer, but thousands of people in Saudia Arabia rushed to buy a phone holder whose recommended installation place is the steering wheel.

I've seen countless car phone chargers, and yes, I've seen these models, too, but I never thought that people whose cars come with airbags integrated into the steering wheel would buy these things. The only reason I can think of for buying a phone holder that must be installed on the steering wheel is the extra convenience when using applications like Google Maps and Waze. If you don't want to install the phone on the center console, or maybe your car comes with an oddly shaped interior design and something else obstructs your mobile device, these phone holders might come in handy.

How Automotive Manufacturing Led to the QR Code

Smartphones may have popularized the QR code in everyday life, but they were actually invented by Toyota supplier Denso.

Quick response (QR) codes just seemed to appear one day in the late 2000s. Now they’re everywhere: plastered on advertising, social media, even Coke bottles, all begging for your attention. But QR codes were designed for manufacturing, not marketing. It was Denso, the Japanese industrial giant closely linked with Toyota, that developed the code in the early Nineties. This story originally appeared in the June 2020 issue of Road & Track A QR code is essentially a better barcode. Traditional barcodes serve your local supermarket just fine, but have a number of limitations. They can only encode around 20 alphanumeric characters horizontally.

Column: Toyota's costly engine recall shows value of doing the right thing

Toyota's Tundra, Lexus LX engine replacement campaign is a customer care example other automakers should follow.

The V-6 engines in the Toyota Tundra pickup and Lexus LX SUV — sourced from two different factories — had similar problems. Recalling them may cost half a billion dollars.

Every once in a while, we get another reminder of the sheer scale of the North American auto industry, and what that scale enables.

What are the top tech trends for 2024?

From autonomous vehicles to hydrogen-powered cars and V2X, Igor Valandro shares his view of the pivotal trends for 2024

The automotive sector value chain has evolved massively from its origins as a simple B2C model based on the manufacture and sale of vehicles. Its increasing complexity responds to market demands, to the stimuli provided by developments in other sectors and, like all industries, to technological advances that make new scenarios not only plausible, but realistic. The automotive technology market size is expected to reach over US$100bn by 2028, growing at a CAGR of 8.21% between 2023 and 2028. Tech giants like Google and Tesla have not been shy in voicing their interest in the sector and have been incorporating more technology into their cars. Where the skills and funds are less bountiful, automakers and tech companies have formed partnerships.

Top Navigation App Gets Massive Update As It Tries to Make Google Maps and Waze Obsolete

Google Maps and Waze dominate the navigation space, but alternative software from HERE, TomTom, and Sygic gain more ground.
The battle has become fiercer, and while Google keeps bringing new features to Google Maps, including the long overdue speedometer on CarPlay, rivals also invest in capabilities that the search giant has been ignoring for years.

Sygic is one such example, as the company announced a major update comprising three big changes. All are supposed to make its navigation software more advanced in the battle against Google Maps and Waze.

Hyundai Applies AI System Using ‘Sound’ For Quality Inspection

Hyundai Mobis has developed an AI system utilizing sound for quality inspection, which is now implemented in its production lines. This innovative approach leverages artificial intelligence to analyze the subtle sounds generated during product inspection to determine quality accuracy.

On June 18, Hyundai Mobis announced that it has recently completed a pilot implementation of an Acoustic AI-based inspection system at its Changwon plant, which produces EPS.

Acoustic AI represents a new generation of artificial intelligence technology, distinguished from generative AI, which relies on language for Q&A tasks. It remains relatively untested in the manufacturing industry.

Ford Has Created the Navigation Feature Google Maps and Waze Must Copy ASAP

Navigation apps like Waze and Google Maps typically provide users with the fastest route to a destination, and most drivers are fine with this.
Everybody wants to get to their destinations as fast as possible, so these applications have become a must-have driving companion for most of us.

However, if you've such software—Waze especially—you probably know that navigation apps have one major shortcoming: they indeed get you to your destination faster, but they sometimes suggest complex routes that include multiple turns in a row. Eventually, the high complexity of a route is such a big shortcoming that some drivers look for simpler routes – it's why a significant number of drivers no longer use Waze but stick with alternative apps, such as Google Maps, which typically favor main roads.

Why Should Collision Shops Support Post-Secondary Education For The Collision Repair Industry?

Supporting post-secondary education ensures the safety and quality of vehicle repairs and addresses workforce shortages. Let me begin by stating I am a graduate of a high school technical program in Upstate New York (the Adirondacks, not Westchester) and have been involved in the collision repair industry in various capacities for more than 45 years. This article is not intended to dismiss high school programs, as they provide valuable training and instruction.

However, there are notable differences between the training provided in high school programs and post-secondary programs. Both have their place, but as a former manager and owner of collision repair businesses, I found hiring graduates with an associate's degree yielded the best return on investment for my business. Therefore, this article will focus exclusively on post-secondary programs.
