Spent the day working on our final route. With two major fires along our path this new route takes us around the Gold Mountain fire near Ouray and the Willow Fire near Leadville.

The intensifying wildfires are necessitating a change in our original route, and the situation near Telluride is becoming increasingly challenging. There are two routes to Lake City, one of which involves a longer detour north with lower elevation passes, while the other follows the Alpine Loop, traversing six of Colorado's highest navigable passes. We had been undecided about which route to take, but the wildfires are now dictating our decision. Although the situation can change rapidly in three weeks, timely rainfall would be a blessing. Our sympathies are with those affected by these terrible fires. According to reports, ranch owners who were forced to evacuate without relocating their cattle have been instructed to cut their fences, allowing the cattle to potentially escape. The circumstances are indeed dire.
The two images below show the two paths with the northern route impassable due to the Gold Mountain Fire, and an elevation chart of our new proposed path.

Mark left this morning on his bike for Canada. Should be back in about three weeks for our BDR run. When he returns we will be pulling his wheels off and getting his tires switched for some knobby tires for all the dirt trails we will be on.

Going to have to keep a close eye on these wildfires. These are two of Colorado’s biggest wildfires at the moment and are really close to our track. The shaded red is showing the smoke affected areas. Praying we get some rain soon 🙏

Mark arrived here in Colorado after transporting his bike in his truck from Houston as it's too hot right now to be riding a bike across Texas. When he arrived, we noticed his rear shock had blown a seal (I'm sure there's a joke there somewhere). After contemplating options on whether to leave the bike here and head to his family's reunion in Canada before returning for the BDR or stay the week and try to locate a replacement shock here in Denver, I was able to help. Luckily, I had just upgraded my shocks a couple of weeks ago and kept my old OEM shocks. The rear is a direct swap, but he will have to contend with a manual preload valve instead of the electric one we pulled off. What we thought might be weeks of delay turned into a 90-minute fix in my garage. The bike is now back up and running, and he can continue as planned on the bike up to Canada before returning at the end of the month, where the both of us will head out for the cross-Colorado trail ride 🤙

Added the Colorado BDR route to my inreach Garmin GPS and as soon as I tried to look at it the gps died. I thought I was going to have to by a new gps for the trip that would have been $899. Took it apart and the battery was swollen up and thanks to Amazon had a new battery ($13.99) delivered in two days and got it back up and running. This device I use as a secondary navigation device but it is also a satellite communicator that allows me to reach out in the event of an accident. It also allows Rachel to track me when I’m off on an adventure 🙂

Getting the old girl back in order for another adventure.
In about 5 weeks I will be attempting the Colorado BDR (Backroads Discovery Route) where we ride from the four corners of SW Colorado to the Wyoming border following the dirt trails and mountain passes the entire length.
The terrain is definitely going to be a bit more technical so fitting the old GS with new suspension and a laundry list of other items to get her ready.
This trip I will be accompanied by a good friend I spent many years working offshore with named Mark Vandyke who will be riding another R1200 GS Adventure bike.
