That’s not rare anymore.
CCC’s latest report: 23.1% of auto claims are now a total loss. A new record.
Here’s what’s actually happening.
Average repair is about $4,800. Cameras, sensors, and calibrations turned a bumper into a four-figure job. The average vehicle on the road is almost 13 years old, so the “value” on paper is thinner. Plenty of these cars still drive. The carrier still writes them off.
And if they do fix it? The market often pays you less when you sell. That’s diminished value — and it’s real.
A first offer is not a final number.
If you have a total-loss check, a low valuation, or a repaired car worth less than it was the morning of the accident:
