Twenty-five years ago today, our world changed. But amid the horror, ordinary people showed extraordinary courage.

Few know that on 9/11, nearly 500,000 people were evacuated from Lower Manhattan by boat — the largest maritime evacuation in history. Ferries, tugboats, private vessels — anyone with a hull and a heart answered the call, carrying strangers to safety across the water.
