We walk the grounds with you, inspecting the trees you're concerned about and any others that catch our eye. We check the trunk, root flare, and canopy, discussing access for our equipment and ensuring we protect your fences, gardens, and lawn during our work.

Riverbend Outdoor Services got its start in Moro in 2007, and it's still family owned and locally operated today. Nearly two decades later, the trees we work on are in the same communities we call home, from Bethalto and Wood River to Godfrey and East Alton.

Working one area for that long teaches you things you can't pick up anywhere else. We know how the wind comes up off the river bluffs, which neighborhoods have heavy clay that keeps roots shallow, and which older subdivisions are full of silver maples and pin oaks that were planted around the same time and are now aging together.

Being local also means accountability. Our reputation travels by word of mouth in towns where people talk to each other, so we'd rather earn a good word from a neighbor than rush a job. Being licensed, insured, and BBB Accredited is part of that, and so is leaving every yard as clean as we found it.

After a windy night, it's common to find a big limb that cracked but never made it to the ground. It's hung up in the branches below, sometimes swinging a little, sometimes perfectly still. Tree crews call these hangers, and they cause more serious injuries than almost anything else in tree work.

The problem is that there's no way to tell from the ground what's holding a hanger in place. A gust of wind, a tug on a rope, or a ladder leaned against the trunk can shift its weight, and a limb that looks small from below can weigh several hundred pounds by the time it reaches you.

If you spot one, keep kids, pets, and cars out from under it, and don't try to pull it down or climb up to it. Our crew secures the limb with ropes and rigging before cutting, then lowers it to the ground under control. It's usually a quick job for us, and one that isn't worth the risk to handle yourself.

Branches resting on a roof or hanging over the gutters don't look like much of a problem in October. Once the first ice storm rolls through Madison County, though, those same limbs pick up weight fast, and a branch that was brushing the shingles can end up punching through them.

Clearance trimming is one of the most practical services we do for homeowners in Moro, Godfrey, and Edwardsville. Our crew removes limbs that overhang the roofline, rub against siding, or crowd the chimney, and we make each cut at the branch collar so the tree seals over cleanly instead of sprouting a mess of weak regrowth.

It also cuts down on the leaves and twigs that clog gutters every fall, and it keeps squirrels from using your roof as a highway into the attic. When we're done, everything gets hauled away and the yard is cleaned up, so the only difference you notice is the extra daylight on the roof.

Metro East fall storms can bring down a limb at 2 a.m. just as easily as mid-afternoon. That's why Riverbend keeps a 24/7 storm emergency response, and it helps to know what actually happens once you reach us.

First, we ask a few quick questions: is anyone hurt, is anything touching a power line, and is the tree resting on the house, a vehicle, or the road? If lines are involved, the utility has to clear them before anyone else gets close. Then we get a crew rolling, prioritizing anything that threatens the home or blocks access.

On site, the crew makes the area safe first, carefully lifting weight off roofs and cars before cutting anything down to size. Once the emergency is handled, we come back to finish the cleanup and talk through whether the rest of the tree can stay. If it's safe, photograph the damage for your insurance before anything is moved.
