Everywhere you look there is something about the Coronavirus. Some resources have blown things way out of context. Yesterday I participated in a conference call with the Governor’s office and many Chief’s, Sheriff’s and leaders across the state regarding the Coronavirus. I fully believe these details are accurate and worthy of following. The most important piece of information from that call is for everyone to maintain a level head and remain calm. There is no reason for panic. The State has successfully dealt with issues during the H1N1, SARS and Ebola incidents as well as many others.
Current cases in Texas – As of mid-afternoon on March 12, 2020, Texas has 23 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with those being situated in the counties of Montgomery, Collin, Tarrant, Dallas, and Harris counties. There are another 104 people being tested, with the suggestion that we’re in the early ‘community spread’ stage in Texas. More diagnoses are expected in the short term, but with adequate preventive measures now we can substantially limit the spread and avoid a surge or spike in those needing hospital care.
COVID-19 is believed to spread mainly from person-to-person close contact (within about 6 feet), respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Also, it might be possible to get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching mouth, nose or eyes.
SYMPTOMS: Unlike a cold, persons infected with COVID-19 have reportedly had mild to severe respiratory illness. Symptoms may appear in as few as 2 days or as long as 14 days after exposure and may include fever, cough, shortness of breath, and fatigue. The greatest at-risk populations are persons over 70, those in nursing homes or senior facilities, and those with existing health problems.
PREVENTION: Currently there is no vaccine to prevent COVID-19. Precautions to avoid exposure (similar to precautions taken to prevent the flu) include:
1. Wash hands often with soap and (warm) water for at least 20 seconds (sing Happy Birthday twice) especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing nose or sneezing. When you wash your hands, rub them together creating friction and clean in between your fingers and around your nails. Dry your hands thoroughly—wet hands carry viruses.
2. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available. Let the sanitizer dry on your hands—this kills the virus.
3. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
4. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
5. Stay home when you are sick.
6. Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash and then wash your hands.
7. Avoid crowded places. When interacting with others, maintain social distances of 6 feet. Forego handshakes and unnecessary personal contact.
8. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects (cell phone, computer keyboard, door knobs, desks, etc) and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
LARGE GATHERINGS: To prevent unnecessary exposure and minimize spread, large gatherings are being cancelled and/or delayed across the state and country.
CONTINUITY OF SERVICES: All levels of government have continuity of operations plans, with public safety being a primary focus, and the essential functions of government from local to federal level will continue.
BIG PICTURE: This is an ever-changing situation creating a cascading series of inconveniences for many, but while the particular illness may be medically ‘novel,’ the ability of Texans to respond in logical, proactive ways is nothing new—it’s who we are.
We come from a long line of ‘adapt and overcome’ Texans.
Remain calm and take preventive measures. This will be over soon.
Contents of this statement are from the Governor’s meeting and CDC and other resources.

How are the roads through Albany?any flooding?
The Archer City PD would like to thank the Shackelford County Sheriff's Office in recovering the stolen vehicle from our jurisdiction. Thanks to some "heads up thinking" and a Copsync "BOLO" issued by the ACPD, the vehicle was recovered within 2 1/2 hours of the initial report. Chief Perron always says, "Same Team, Different Patch"! Do y’all know anything about Rural FireTrucks on Hwy 576?
I was fortunate to have been raised in the tiny city of Moran. Also I was fortunate to have have Emory Morris as friend and mentor while going through my teenage years. He was a fine and caring man that represented high standards In law enforcement for the greater part of his life. My grandfather was Samuel Baldwin Killough who died shortly after falling from off the back of a fire truck while playing the town Santa Claus in December of 1947. He was 83 years old. His son Earl Killough owned and operated a grocery store during the 50's and 60's in Albany. Thanks so much for accepting my friend request.
