This was a curious one. A customer from the coast asked us to restore this set of plates that had been restored before. His car hit a deer one morning and bent up one of the plates along with some damage to the car.

If you look close, you'll notice one plate is stamped '51 and the other is blank. This mismatch can happen when a plate was lost or damaged and a replacement was sent, but the blank plate should have two dashes instead of one to show it was a replacement. The most likely explanation is that the plates were different pairs, one issued for 1951 and another issued sometime between late 1952 and early 1954 when they went to the blank years. Someone in the past must have matched them up by chance to create a pair.

Another 1932, this one was borderline, but the customer insisted. The Oregon DMV is very picky about color and condition for Special Interest and the customer was worried the plate wouldn't pass. I think it might have, but it was going on a restored car, so he wanted a restored plate.

Here's a plate we restored for a customer in the Portland area. The top two holes weren't too bad, but were bigger than normal and oblong, so we welded them and redrilled the holes for a fresh start.
