Eating in Upstate New York and Beyond

Many restaurants never make this blog. I will never share who they are since I will never report a negative. Everyone has a bad day. If I don’t post on Tuesday at 7:45 AM, I probably had a bad meal. My name is Lee Hinkleman, and I am a Foodie.

A sub shop and gas station with beer samplings and rock and roll music playing? Today’s visit was way out of the box for this blog, if it had not been for a follower's suggestion, I would have never stopped. Opened in June, Adams Center Market on North St in Adams Center has added a new dimension to convenience stores. Best yet, it’s a local family-owned store.

The Italian Sub was lightly toasted and filled with daily fresh cut Genoa salami, pepperoni, capicola ham (a traditional Italian and Corsican Pork cold cut ), fresh-cut onion, lettuce, and tomato. Sprinkled with an olive-based oil that tasted of red wine vinegar then served on fresh Italian bread.

The pizza is made with fresh dough hand-rolled daily. The secret ingredient is in the sauce. It was rich in flavor with a hint of sugar. The pizza was thick enough to give it some texture, while thin enough to taste the toppings. At first bite, it was light and fluffy, an indication of dough that is not a pre-packaged shell.

The chili was second only to one place, thus far, in the Tri-County region. This two bean chili was beefy without the heavy tomato flavor often found in restaurants. It had a slight sugary taste with a mild spicy bite. Interestingly it had an unusual hint of celery (which only enhanced its flavor). Best yet it had a level a thickness that was far from the watery chili I find quite commonly. A great chili in the winter can define a restaurant.

They also serve a wide array of burgers and chicken sandwiches including a popular Chicken Parm. For breakfast, they offer a monster of a sandwich that includes bacon, sausage, and ham. This rapidly became their best seller in the morning. Breakfast pizza is available as well.

Best yet, they serve Tug Hill Artisan Roasters Coffee. Some of the most flavorful and rich coffee around roasted locally. My personal favorite is the “Rough & Ready Nicaragua Dark” it is freshly ground with a flavor that is rich with a full body. As with every blend, it is uniquely named after something reflective of the Tug Hill Plateau. The flavor has a robust taste that is beyond comparison. I have included some photos of their facility from before the virus.

They also have on tap (to go only) Garland City Beer Works brewed fresh in Watertown. Established in 2018 this brewery continues to provide a high-quality beer.

Christie was the master sandwich artist, her passion was prevalent when she came to my table, ensuring my meal was satisfactory. The entire staff was excited and motivated by the owner on the premises. What makes a family-owned establishment unique, is simple, the owner is “hands-on”, something rarely found in a chain restaurant. Craig has done an amazing job here and has some creative visions as they mover forward.

The owners have an open mind while still having an understanding of their core business. The Valentine family influenced the grocery side while the Foodie side has been influenced by numerous fellow Foodies.

I noted on the store side they offer some local favorites. Morgias sauce, Alteri’s bread, and Pearls English muffins.

I’m told that the Valentine Family purchased this property when they built the Nice & Easy at 177 & 81, to prevent a competitor from coming in. When they sold to what is now 7/11 they decided to lease this property to Craig Bennett (a former employee).

The choice of suppliers reflected the grocery side of the business. My belief is as the restaurant side of the business grows they may change to some more traditional restaurant providers. Or, maybe not. Their primary suppliers are Core’Mark and River Valley. Both of which added further to the intrigue of this visit. Neither one has ever been listed on the blog. It comes down to the quality of the product, a sufficient supply chain, and freshness.

Call in advance at 315-284-4114. They are located at 13306 North Street in Adams Center.
