Veterans of Foreign Wars Martin D. Denson Post 6873

Veterans of Foreign Wars Martin D. Denson Post 6873 Post 6873 is dedicated to supporting those who sacrifice so much for this country. Veterans, service members in the US Armed Forces, and their families
(22)

The VFW traces its roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service: Many arrived home wounded or sick. There was no medical care or veterans' pension for them, and they were left to care for themselves. In their misery, some of these veterans banded together and formed organizations with what would become known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. After chapters were formed in Ohio, Colorado and Pennsylvania, the movement quickly gained momentum. By 1915, membership grew to 5,000; by 1936, membership was almost 200,000. Since then, the VFW's voice had been instrumental in establishing the Veterans Administration, creating a GI Bill for the 20th century, the development of the national cemetery system and the fight for compensation for Vietnam vets exposed to Agent Orange and for veterans diagnosed with Gulf War Syndrome. In 2008, VFW won a long-fought victory with the passing of a GI Bill for the 21st Century, giving expanded educational benefits to America's active-duty service members, and members of the Guard and Reserves, fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. The VFW also has fought for improving VA medical centers services for women veterans. Besides helping fund the creation of the Vietnam, Korean War, World War II and Women in Military Service memorials, the VFW in 2005 became the first veterans' organization to contribute to building the new Disabled Veterans for Life Memorial, which opened in November 2010. Annually, the nearly 1.9 million members of the VFW and its Auxiliaries contribute more than 8.6 million hours of volunteerism in the community, including participation in Make A Difference Day and National Volunteer Week. From providing over $3 million in college scholarships and savings bonds to students every year, to encouraging elevation of the Department of Veterans Affairs to the president's cabinet, the VFW is there.

Mission: Our purpose shall be fraternal, patriotic, historical and educational; to preserve and strengthen comradeship among our members; to assist worthy comrades; to perpetuate the memory and history of our dead, and to assist their widows and orphans; to maintain true allegiance to the Government of the United States of America, and fidelity to its Constitution and laws; to foster true patriotism, to maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom; and to preserve and defend the United States from all her enemies, whomsoever.

SFFW is amazed at the response and outpouring of our Facebook post unveiling our Banners at the Taylor County Courthouse—over 34,000 views, 80 shares, and so many meaningful messages and texts from across this nation, THANK YOU to all of you who recognize the importance of Honoring and Remembering those who served our country. With that said, we had numerous inquiries about the banners which I will break into 2 responses:
For those who wanted a banner for a Military Member who died while serving, I will look into securing more light poles around the courthouse.
For those who wanted a banner at our 5K Oorah Warrior Run next year and placed at the beginning/end of the run you can email sffwtexas.org for information. #EveryDayIsMemorialDay #MemoriesOfHonor #NeverForgetTheirService

I’ve had a lot of people ask me after Saturday mornings tornadoes, what to do during one. Here’s a handy graphic about the safe places in a home.
- Seek shelter inside
- Go to a basement or lowest level
- Interior closet or bathroom
- Away from exterior walls and windows
- Leave vehicles, mobile homes
The most important thing to do today is figure out a plan in case of a tornado or tornado warning, and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings.

Surviving Families of Fallen Warriors

Surviving Families of Fallen Warriors has received numerous inquiries about the “Rucking” event during our 5K Oorah Warrior Run on 18 May (Armed Forces Day), at the Abilene Zoo. In the next couple days we will try to answer them. First, rucking is a low-impact workout that effectively combines cardio with strength training. With roots in military training, it’s gaining popularity as a preferred workout for fitness, weight loss, and endurance training and is basically carrying a weighted backpack. That’s it. The term rucking comes from rucksack, which is another word for backpack.

It can be a 10-pound backpack carried 1-mile walk around your neighborhood, a 25-pound pack carried on the challenging terrain of soft sand, or a 50-pound pack (or heavier) for many miles on a trail with steep grades. Our rucking event will be a 5K on fairly flat ground with rucksacks filled with canned goods. In the future we hope to build on this rucking event working with GORUCK Rucking Division. #AllVeteransMatter #HonoringThoseWhoServed #HonoringThoseWhoDiedWhileServing #NeverForgotten

Today is Gold Star Spouses Day. Although everyday is a day without their spouse, today causes us to reflect on their loss and that of their children and the support they need to move forward day after day, year after year. It should help us not only to Honor and Remember their military loved one who was lost, but to remember the great sacrifice they and their children have endured and who now have to rebuild a life without their spouse and their parent. Surviving Families of Fallen Warriors stands by and supports the many spouses who have shown such GRIT in their unimaginable loss. We Salute You today and everyday for your strength, tenacity, and bravery as you take one step at a time in living a life that matters for your loved one and your family! #EveryDayIsMemorialDay #WeWillAlwaysBeThereForYou #StongerEveryDay

Surviving Families of Fallen Warriors

Another Bataan story...as a young girl watching the movie, “No Man is an Island”, I was impacted by the true story of Navy radioman George Ray Tweed, who avoided capture during World War II on the island of Guam after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. There were many reasons, my father was a U.S. Navy military member, we had lived on Guam and my parents became life-long friends with some of the most welcoming and loving people who lived on the island their whole lives. But mostly, as the name implies, that Tweed survived due to how the people supported, encouraged, and risked their very lives for him—basically having each other’s back. The #MemoriesOfHonor team, upon meeting them clearly indicated no “person” is an island. My journey to this team began last year when I was encouraged, supported and told without doubt that I could indeed meet the challenge of the Bataan March. When I thought to pull out I was encouraged to show up and once there, experiencing everyone’s fierce passion fueled my desire to NOT let any of them down! Especially Trinnie Schley, my personal cheerleader throughout the last year who also introduced me to the survival snacks of pickle juice, beef jerky and sweet candy! And while Honoring the loved ones of Surviving Families of Fallen Warriors and Lt. Col. Dyess, she had my back by Honoring our daughter, CW2 Jennifer C. Hunter at Mile 9, which only made my heart that much fuller and so grateful for her ever present loving support of Jennifer’s family, especially her boys, husband, brother, sister-in-law, niece, nephew, and extended family who loves and misses her so much! #MemoriesOfHonor #NeverForgotten #EverydayIsMemorialDay #GratefulFriendship #NoPersonIsAnIsland
