Controlling the Hip

[Jo here] A couple of weekends ago, Gray worked with Bailey and Rowdy a bit. In this clip, he talks about how Rowdy wasn't wanting to let Gray control his hip.

Tadpole City

[Jo here] Several weeks ago, I stopped to take note of this little phenomenon.

With all the rain we'd been getting, part of the training yard would never quite dry up before another rain storm would hit. And then all these little tadpoles started appearing (seemingly out of the blue!).

That area was finally able to dry up quite a bit before this last set of rain but I think Gray's gonna have frogs out there for a while yet!

[Jo here] Here's a quick compilation video of Gray's continuing work with Sonny, the horse he's currently training for a client. And, though there's still more work to be done, Sonny's come a long, long way! Just a few days ago I shared a video of Sonny not being willing to even walk close to the pool noodles. And now, he'll go through them with no issues at all!

Sonny and Gray

[Jo here] This is Sonny. Gray's training him for a client.

Sonny isn't really happy about things brushing his sides and legs so Gray created an obstacle that allows him (and other horses) to build more confidence and trust in that area.

Sonny was not interested in walking through it, though. And, after consistently refusing to even walk forward, Gray started making Sonny work a little harder. The goal is for Sonny to evenutally walk through the obstacle, and let the pool noodles brush along his sides and feet, without any hesitation or fear!

Penny and the Pool Noodles

[Jo here] A couple of weeks ago, Penny and I tried out the newest obstacle to Gray's training yard. As you can see, the pool noodles will end up rubbing along the side(s) of Penny as she walks through them. It took her a little bit to check things out and decide to step through but, once she did, it was no problem!

(p.s. forgive the awkwardness of some of the video! I was filming while working with her!)

Penny & Jo: New Obstacles

[Jo here] Since we're doing so much better on the teeter-totter these days, Penny and I are starting to spend more time on some of the other obstacles at the training ground. The stacked tires, for example. On this day, she made it all the way to the top one...but wasn't yet ready to step forward onto the lower one beneath it. We'll get there!

p.s. sorry for the vertical vid! I was doing double duty that day! ;p

Controlling Rio's Hip

[Jo here] A couple of days ago, I mentioned that Rio isn't interested in moving much faster than a walk, if at all, with a rider. Gray teamed up with Megan and worked Rio on the ground while she rode on his back. By controlling Rio's hip, Gray helped keep him moving while Megan moved him into a trot.

Doctoring Joe B's foot

[Jo here] A little while back, Joe B managed to slice his foot open on a fence. Abigail was taking the time to doctor it up a bit. A little while later, Gray came over and helped her bandage it back up. This is the kind of stuff you get to learn as a student out here!

Gray Riding Apache

[Jo here] Take a look at this!

This is Apache. He's a sweet, gentle boy. He's also blind. The clicking you hear is a sonar device that's clipped to his halter (you can see it in the video) which helps Apache know where fences and other objects are in his environment. This has changed his life! He used to have to be kept in a pen but, with this little device, he's been able to be put in a pasture again!

Gray thought he'd also see how Apache handled being ridden. And, by the looks of things here, I'd say he did pretty good! Apache may be blind but he is not broken!

Penny Conquering Conquer the Teeter-Totter #3

[Jo here] *Third video in a series*⁣

This was the first time Penny stepped forward after the teeter-totter "broke" to the other side. Usually, she'd immediately start backing off!⁣

We continued to work on backing up and walking forward, backing up and walking forward, over and over, each time getting further and further back on the platform (and, therefore, closer to the breaking point) and then balancing a bit so she had to walk forward with the platform moving. Each time, her confidence and trust in me were building. It finally paid off and she took a step forward after teetering to the other side!⁣

Penny Conquering the Teeter-Totter #2

[Jo here] *Second video in a series*⁣
⁣⁣
In this video, you'll hear me say it's the first time she took a step forward after letting the platform teeter a bit. That was the first big step toward conquering this particular obstacle!⁣

We had been working on backing up and walking forward, backing up and walking forward, over and over, each time getting further and further back on the platform (and, therefore, closer to the breaking point) and then balancing a bit so she had to walk forward with the platform moving. ⁣

Penny Conquering the Teeter-Totter #1

[Jo here] *First video in a series*

I thought I'd share a series of videos showing some of the work Penny and I (and many others along the way!) did to get her to walk forward over the teeter-totter.

As you can see in this first video, Penny would walk backward over the teeter-totter. She would not walk forward over it, though. And, once it broke over to the other side, she wouldn't stop on the platform and would just continue to back off. She wasn't interested in walking back up onto the platform from there, either. We kept working on that but, in the meantime, we also took Penny's fear of the platform breaking over and broke it down in smaller steps.

Gray & Lights

[Jo here] A few weeks ago, Amy K Hays brought Bright Lights (aka "Lights") to Gray for training. There has been lots of progress made with her since then including backing up, loading in/out of trailers, walking through tires and more. In this particular video, you can hear Gray talk to Lights about dropping her head. Every little thing matters and can make a big difference in how confident a horse becomes!

[Jo here] Joe B's such a good boy. He can be a bit mischievous but he sure does like his Abigail. It's not unusual for her to simply call for him and he'll come to her from wherever he might be.

Pam & Sugar: Footwork

[Jo here] Look at this! Pam can get Sugar to walk through the row of flat tires. No skirting and no jumping, just calm steps in and through each tire. Horses typically don't like their feet to be enclosed so this is a big accomplishment!
