Gray Performance Horses

Gray Performance Horses My desire is to produce horses that noticeably stand out from other horses, which are horses that have manners, that have a can-do attitude, want to please you, and are relaxed in everything they do.

Little Abigail, as we affectionately call her, has come such a long way through a lot of hard work and dedication. Here, she’s working with Twister as she learns how to tell the horses that she means business! Though she be small, she be mighty!

[Jo here] We joke around here that Gray is all seeing, but the reality is … well, he really is! He has a gift of being able to keep an eye on everyone who’s working with their horses, even from across the training yard. He’s always quick to teach, correct or encourage, even if you had no idea he was even watching.

“oooooooh yea. That’s the spot!”

Miss Kay found the right spot while giving Cash some pets!

[Jo here] Gaining a horse’s trust is all about consistency and patience. Angie has been working with Koal off and on for a while now. Several weeks ago, she was asking him to trot and he was being a bit reluctant to comply. But she didn’t give up! He has to learn that no matter how stubborn he his, she’s not going to quit asking, and it’s probably worth it to just go ahead and do what he’s being asked. He’s not going to get beat to get there, but he is going to be asked until he finally chooses to comply.

[Jo here] You may often see each of us, and Gray, running these horses in what may seem like an endless series of circles. There are several reasons for doing circle work: movement evaluation, communication development or attitude adjustment, for example.

In this case, Chexx was being a bit "extra" with Abigail earlier - not paying attention, throwing her head around and bucking - so Abigail chose to stop and redirect that extra energy to circle work as a way to adjust Chexx's attitude a bit!

Sometimes, we have to break down even the simplest of obstacles into smaller chunks. Here, Carol is trying to get Sunday to walk through some tires. This requires the horse be aware of it’s feet and to trust the rider that they aren’t leading it somewhere they can’t manage. Sometimes, walking through a tire is a scary thing for a horse, so we start out with a split tire and slowly move it closer and closer together until the horse is confident stepping through a complete tire!

“The food truck is coming, the food truck is coming!” - Chexx

You’d think she never eats by the way Chexx is always first to arrive at her (supplemental) feeding time haha!

A Distracted Zeke

[Jo here] A few weeks ago, I was working with Zeke. He was a bit disctracted so took a quick break to check out what was going on in the round pen. Angie was working with Kandy and...well...I think Zeke has a crush!

Annie & Carol: Tree Trimming!

[Jo here] Annie & Carol came to Gray about six months ago. Both were lacking confidence and couldn't fully relax with each other. They've come a long way together in the months that have passed, though. And a few weeks ago, Carol shared this video with us of her and Miss Annie doing some, uh, tree trimming around their property, haha! Look at calm they both are!

Cale Riding Around

[Jo here] For a lot of the students out here, working with and learning about horses is the primary draw for coming out each day, week or weekend. Riding the horses is just the icing on the cake. And here, Cale gets to ride around after doing some groundwork with Pigeon!
