Gray Performance Horses

Gray Performance Horses My desire is to produce horses that noticeably stand out from other horses, which are horses that have manners, that have a can-do attitude, want to please you, and are relaxed in everything they do. www.grayperformancehorses.com

Kittens!

[Jo here] GPH is proud to announce that we have kittens! Our barn cat (who still honestly has no official name :/) had a litter of five tiny little kittens a couple of weeks ago! She's a great mama to them and we look forward to watching them grow!

Carol & Annie

[Jo here] This is Annie and her owner, Carol. Annie first came to GPH to be trained a few months ago. She's a sweet soul and has done a fantastic job learning "all the things." And now, it's really fun to watch her and Carol work together on those same things!

Cale Riding Around

[Jo here] For a lot of the students out here, working with and learning about horses is the primary draw for coming out each day, week or weekend. Riding the horses is just the icing on the cake. And here, Cale gets to ride around after doing some groundwork with Pigeon!

Isabella & Duke Teeter-Totter

[Jo here] Isabella, one of Gray's newest students, worked on encouraging Duke to step up on the teeter-totter a couple of weeks ago. Duke's still working on building his confidence so he's hesitant but Isabella doesn't give up and does a great job coaxing him forward!

Cale & Pigeon Teeter Totter

[Jo here] Cale & Pigeon walking over the teeter totter last weekend! This big guy (Pigeon) really is an eager beaver, wanting to do all he can to please whomever is working with him, and Cale is doing a great job learning how to lead him!

Abigail & Kandy

[Jo here] Abigail was back in town for the Christmas and New Year break! She came out to the barn multiple times and had the chance to work with Kandy on some of the obstacles around the training yard. Here, she and Kandy are working on the stacked tires...with a little help from Gray. 😊

[Jo here] Everyone, meet Kandy!

This little mare joined the GPH family a couple of months ago! She has a super sweet disposition and is eager to please whomever is working with her. She does have a stubborn streak, at times, but it usually doesn't take much to convince her to drop it. She'd rather do a fast walk or trot than a slower one, but we're all working on that with her.

Kandy fits in well with the rest of the herd (although, Chexx might have a thing or two to say about that!) and even took to walking to the barn for feeding time easily! ;p

Welcome, sweet girl! We love having you with us!

Cale & Duke

[Jo here] Several weeks ago, students were out and about working on various things with their horses and Gray gave a few pointers to Cale when working with Duke on the bridge platform!

#groundwork #horselife #practicemakesprogress #naturalhorsemanship #buildingtrust

p.s. I know it's been a while since I've posted anything about what's happening around the barn. :/ Chalk it up to changed schedules and the holidays, I guess. Here's to getting back to a semi-normal posting schedule now that the new year is in full swing!

[Jo here] While most of us at Gray’s work to earn the trust and loyalty and teach good manners to the horses at the barn, there are those (*ehem* @scottdelonyphotography ) who work just as hard to tease them... 🙄😏🥴🙂

Penny & Jo: Stacked Tires

[Jo here] Well, Penny and I are continuing to progress in our relationship and the obstacles we can overcome! We still have a long way to go. I'm still pulling on her head a lot and need to work on my cues and body language so much more while she needs to work on being LESS. STUBBORN....

But.

I'm pretty proud of where we're at right now. This was our second time to get up to the top stack without anyone leading her from the ground. She chose to exit off the side of the stack instead of moving down to the tire in front of her but...baby steps, right? ;p

Today’s Inspiration

10/07/2019

The GPH Family is saddened to share the news of the passing of Buck, a very much beloved four-legged member of the family out here.

As many people know, animals have a way of have a way of embedding themselves into the lives of humans and Buck was no different. He was dumped on Gray’s property as a puppy and quickly found his home in the hearts of not only Gray and Regina, but their neighbors and all the students that would come out to the barn. Rumor has it that, at one point in his life, Gray had started cutting down on some of Buck’s food because he was getting fat! It didn’t seem to work, though. He wasn’t losing weight and Gray was stumped. Until he learned that Buck would make the rounds, going from neighbor to neighbor, getting scraps of food from each of them.

Buck greeted everyone who came to the barn with a nuzzle and a tail wag. He loved snoozing and riding along on the four wheeler and would even wait for someone to drive by on it if he was at a neighbor’s house. You could see him amble out across the yard to get a ride home!

Buck was humanely euthanized on Thursday after discovering cancer riddled all throughout his body. He was 7 years old. He had a big heart and a gentle soul and he will be greatly missed.

(p.s. sorry I’m in so many of the video clips! It’s what I had of him that I could find!)

GPH Family Chat

[Jo here] Community is a such a big part of the training out here at Gray’s. Even though we’re all out here working with different horses on different goals and objectives, at the end of the day, we’re all a little family. Random “conferences” like this are not uncommon during the training day. Sometimes they’re about helping a rider with a horse, other times they’re just chatting about the weather.

Ozzy & Kendyl: Telephone Poles

[Jo here] Having a sure-footed horse is a priority in Gray’s method of training. Here, Kendyl is doing her standard circle work with Ozzy, but she has added in the telephone poles. This helps Ozzy to learn to be aware of his surroundings and where he’s putting his feet while still focusing on Kendyl.

[Jo here] As the students out here build up their confidence and trust with their horse, we begin removing the physical connections to the horse. Here, in the safety of the round pen, Pam is starting doing her standard circle work with Sugar, but without the aid of a lead and halter attached. This is a great way for the riders to see just how much their horses are paying attention to their cues!

Abigail & Joe B

[Jo here] Abigail is Gray's longest-running student and this week she’s headed off to college. We’re sad to see her go! She’s been so instrumental in helping all of the other students progress in their skills and, as you can see here, she’s not too shabby with a horse herself!

Here, she and Joe B are demonstrating several of the obstacles with no lead, he simply trusts and respects her and goes where she says to go. It has required a lot of time, work and commitment to get to this point, but it's paid off! What a bond these two have!

Good luck, Abigail, we’ll miss you!

Chexx & Katie: NOPE! Not doin' that!

[Jo here] You often get to see our horses as they’re already used to an obstacle and overcoming it. Here’s an inside look at what happens when they’re still new to an obstacle!

The second tire is filled with empty plastic water bottles. The texture and sound under the horses’ feet is something new and it can take them time to trust the rider enough to walk through it all.

Building this trust on the ground is critical so that, when riding, you can take the horse through any real-life obstacle you may encounter and, even if they’re uncomfortable, they’ll have the confidence and trust to know that you will not lead them somewhere unsafe.
