"Toyota has officially confirmed some of the biggest details yet about the long-awaited return of one of its most iconic nameplates: the Celica.
According to Gazoo Racing executives, the new model will be called the Celica Sport and will feature an all-wheel-drive layout paired with a hybrid-assisted powertrain.
At the heart of the car is expected to be Toyota's new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, known internally as the G20E. The company is reportedly still deciding whether the final production version will use a conventional hybrid system or a plug-in hybrid setup.
The return of the Celica marks a major shift as Toyota prepares for stricter global emissions regulations while maintaining the performance-focused character enthusiasts expect.
Adding even more excitement, Toyota was recently seen testing a mysterious rally-inspired prototype that many believe could be linked to the new Celica.
If the rumors prove correct, the Celica Sport may eventually serve as the foundation for Toyota's next World Rally Championship challenger, continuing the rally heritage that made the Celica GT-Four and modern GR models legendary among performance car fans.
