When it’s time for periodic maintenance at the service shop, one of the most common questions is: “Should we drain the oil as soon as the engine is switched off, or should we let it cool down first?”

Although changing engine oil may seem like a simple procedure, the oil temperature affects how efficiently the used oil can be drained from the engine. When the engine is completely cold, the oil becomes more viscous and flows more slowly. For this reason, it is generally more suitable to change the oil while the engine is still close to its operating temperature.

Rather than draining the oil immediately after switching off the engine, waiting a few minutes allows the oil to flow down from the upper parts of the engine into the sump and helps the warm oil drain in a more controlled manner. This makes it possible to remove a greater amount of the used oil from the system.

During a long journey, you notice that the oil level has dropped, but you cannot find the exact same motor oil currently in your vehicle. So, does mixing different motor oils damage the engine?

Having the same viscosity grade does not necessarily mean that the oils are fully compatible. The additive packages and production technologies of different products may interact with each other and negatively affect the oil’s protective performance.

In an emergency, it may be possible to top up the oil level with an oil that meets the viscosity grade and technical specifications specified by your vehicle manufacturer. However, this should not be considered a permanent solution; at the first opportunity, a complete oil change should be carried out using the appropriate motor oil.
