A brief history of Wat Umong, Chiang Mai..
* Built around 1839 (Thai calendar year) by King Mangrai, it was originally named "Wat Phai Sip Et Ko" (Eleven Bamboo Groves Temple). Later, during the reign of King Kuena Thammarat, it was renovated and a tunnel was built under the pagoda in dedication to "Phra Maha Thera Chan," a highly knowledgeable monk in the Tripitaka, for use as a place of Vipassana meditation.
* The Buddha head and numerous stone carvings surrounding the temple are works of art by artisans from Phayao, dating back approximately 600 years.
