The F20 BMW 1 series is the last batch of rear-wheel-driven hatchbacks that BMW ever produced. It has a short lifespan with only two generations and it is a gem to get right now as it is the cheapest diesel-powered model the German firm offers. Although being a diesel engine, isn’t too noisy and intrusive as one expected, producing a raw feeling. The engine may be small as it has a 3-cylinder but it can produce 270nm of torque and it is a twin-powered turbo fitted with it, making the car feel energetic when travelling in the 30-80km/hr range. The engine is well-suited for Singapore’s urban driving speed limit while enjoying 25km/L fuel consumption. Being a rear-wheel drive hatchback with a long bonnet gives you happy handling but needs to be cautious on tail tipping. Only actual drivers would enjoy this excitement as the suspension can be stiff but joyous. Inside the cabin feel nostalgic due to the retro cockpit but remains stylish in the modern era. Infotainment is straightforward and not festooned with buttons while driving aids are basic ones. Being a five-door car than its predecessor, cabin space is able to fit 4 adults reasonably. Even though this is the underdog vehicle, this car remains enjoyable to drive, economical, practical and not complicated at all.

The heavily revised third-generation Nissan X-Trail shares the same design as the Qashqai but in a bigger version where it is able to seat 7 people or has 550 litres of boot space. The exterior looks neat and tidy for a casual family favourite with a V-motion chrome front grill while the interior is sensibly laid out and is easy to use. While it feels solid and sturdy, it is cladded with plastic but most of it is soft and forgiving. The X-Trail does come with decent off-road capabilities which most drivers would use on their daily drive to improve the handling as it comes with All Mode 4x4-i. It has 3 settings, 2WD, AWD or Auto and Lock where it lets the system vary the engine’s torque on different surface conditions. Although the X-trail has a 2.0-litre NA engine with a CVT gearbox, it doesn’t look inspiring but excels in ride comfort with Active Ride Control features. With that said, the 2016 model, it has keyless entry with push-start, LED lights, electrical seats, a touchscreen infotainment system, and cruise control to make this an affordable SUV with 7 seats.
