1967 – When Pakistan Was Honda-Crazed!

Long before the legendary Honda CD70 became Pakistan's most popular motorcycle, there was the stylish 90cc Atlas Honda.

This rare 1967 advertisement proudly declared, "THIS STUDENT IS HONDA-CRAZED", reflecting the growing popularity of Honda motorcycles among young riders. The bike had already earned Japan's Best Design Award (1967) and was promoted for its outstanding fuel economy, with a running cost of just 2.5 paisas per mile, along with readily available spare parts.

Marketed by Atlas Autos Ltd., Karachi, and Atlas EPak Ltd., Dacca, the advertisement carried Honda's famous slogan:

"You meet the nicest people on a Honda."

A fascinating glimpse into an era when Honda was just beginning its journey in Pakistan—one that would eventually shape the country's motorcycle culture for generations.

The Vauxhall Victor 2000 was one of the finest family sedans assembled in Pakistan by Ghandhara Motor Company. Known for its comfort, reliability, and elegant styling, it became a popular choice among government officials, senior executives, and business leaders. Many official cars even featured a flag staff mounted on the left front fender, a familiar sight during that era.

An interesting chapter in its history is that Ghandhara Industries offered the Victor 2000 at a reduced price to customers purchasing a Bedford truck. Many transporters took advantage of this offer and later sold the car at the prevailing market price, helping the Victor gain wider popularity across Pakistan.

The Victor 2000 featured bucket seats and a floor-mounted gear shifter, giving it a more modern and premium feel than many of its contemporaries.

The Vauxhall Victor remains a memorable part of Pakistan's automotive heritage and a reminder of a time when locally assembled cars reflected quality, prestige, and craftsmanship.

Introduced as Pakistan's first locally assembled 800cc hatchback, the Suzuki FX (Model SS80) transformed personal transportation and quickly became the country's most popular small car. It later paved the way for the legendary Suzuki Mehran, which would dominate Pakistan's roads for decades.

This rare 1986 advertisement by Bukhari Motors proudly described the Suzuki FX as "Pakistan's Best-Selling Car." It highlighted premium features for its time, including headrests, floor carpeting, reclining seats, a cigarette lighter, and a heater, while the air-conditioned variant offered even greater comfort.

1986 Prices:
• Standard Model with Heater: Rs. 87,000 (Advance Booking: Rs. 12,500)
• Air-Conditioned Model with Heater: Rs. 97,000 (Advance Booking: Rs. 15,000)

These were the good old days when owning a brand-new car was within the reach of many middle-class families. In 1986, the US dollar was worth around Rs. 17.40, meaning a Suzuki FX cost approximately US$5,000. Today, it is almost impossible to buy a brand-new passenger car for that price, reflecting how dramatically the automotive market and purchasing power have changed over the decades.

The advertisement also reflects a different era of Pakistan's automotive industry, featuring Bukhari Motors showrooms in Karachi and Lahore, a nostalgic reminder of the 1980s.

It was the family's first automobile and a symbol of affordable mobility.

Renault 4 – Small Car, Big Qualities!

Officially launched in France in 1961 by the French automaker Renault, the Renault 4 quickly gained worldwide popularity for its practicality, reliability, and innovative design.

In Pakistan, it was marketed by Republic Motors Limited, Manghopir Road, Karachi, under the Nationalised Industries banner. The Renault 4 featured front-wheel drive, independent four-wheel suspension, a spacious five-door hatchback, and an impressive fuel economy of up to 50 miles per gallon—features that were well ahead of their time.

Interestingly, purchasing a Renault 4 in Pakistan required a government permit issued by the Federal or Provincial Governments before it could be bought through an authorized dealer.

The Renault 4 remains an important chapter in Pakistan's automotive history and a memorable classic for many enthusiasts.

Suzuki Custom, powered by a 550cc two-stroke engine, was the first Suzuki passenger car introduced to the Pakistani market.

Many people believe Suzuki's journey in Pakistan began with the locally assembled 800cc Suzuki FX in 1984. However, Suzuki had already entered the market in May 1978 with the imported Suzuki Custom, brought directly from Japan.

This newspaper advertisement, published on 13 May 1978, featured a white four-door Suzuki Custom with a prominent SUZUKI badge on the front grille. Priced at Rs. 41,662 (Ex-Karachi), it was marketed and distributed by Sindh Engineering Limited, a state-owned enterprise under the PECO Group, with offices at West Wharf Road and El-Meezan, 59 Shahrah-e-Quaid-e-Azam, Karachi.

The Suzuki Custom laid the foundation for the locally assembled Suzuki FX in 1984 and later the iconic Suzuki Mehran, which became one of Pakistan's most successful and recognizable small cars.
