This is called dry docking—one of the most important maintenance periods in a ship’s life. It’s the only time the entire underwater hull becomes visible, allowing engineers and crew to inspect, repair, and maintain parts that are impossible to reach while the ship is afloat.

What looks like a giant ship parked on land is actually a carefully planned operation that can take days or even weeks to complete.
