Securing the Future of Trucking: A Call for Investment in Driver Training.
The trucking industry is the backbone of Papua New Guinea’s economy but we will be facing an increasing shortage of skilled and experienced truck drivers that threatens supply chains and economic growth over the next 10 to 50 years. Our old truck drivers are retiring. Who will fill their spaces? Without decisive action today, this shortage will intensify, affecting businesses, trade and livelihoods across the country.
To address this, I am spearheading a Truck Driver Training Academy Initiative, designed to recruit and train Grade 10 and 12 dropouts, equipping them with essential skills to become highly competent, professional truck drivers. Over a 5 to 7-year structured program, these trainees will master:
âś… Basic and advanced truck driving skills
âś… Mechanics and troubleshooting for truck repairs
âś… Logistics administration and operational efficiency
âś… Load restraint and DG transportation protocols
âś… Critical driving techniques: city, highway, night, and fatigue management
âś… Difflocks, coupling & uncoupling systems for heavy vehicles.
This academy will not only produce skilled drivers but also provide lifelong career opportunities, financial security and professional development for our young workforce.
A Call for Public-Private Partnership
To make this vision a reality, we seek collaboration from private sector stakeholders, government agencies and industry leaders who recognize the urgency of investing in Papua New Guinea’s trucking future.
This initiative requires investment in training infrastructure, equipment, expert instructor development and long-term workforce development.
I invite transport companies, logistics firms, policymakers and investors to join me in shaping a stronger, more resilient trucking industry for the decades ahead.
