MOTOR VEHICLE ODO METER TEMPERING.
A crime that is becoming a norm here in PNG.
Odometer tampering is when someone intentionally alters or manipulates the vehicle's mileage reading on the odometer (the instrument that measures how many miles or kilometers the vehicle has traveled). The goal is often to make the vehicle appear to have been driven less than it actually has, which can make it seem more valuable or in better condition than it really is.
**Why do people tamper with an odometer?**
- To increase the vehicle's resale value.
- To hide excessive wear or damage.
- To deceive buyers about the true age and usage of the vehicle.
**How is it done?**
- Connecting wires to reset or roll back the odometer.
- Replacing or modifying the instrument cluster.
- Using software tools to alter the electronic mileage records.
**Why is it a problem?**
- It misleads buyers and can lead to buying a vehicle with more wear and tear than expected.
- It’s illegal in many countries, as it constitutes fraud.
**Signs of odometer tampering:**
- Discrepancies between the vehicle condition and reported mileage.
- Physical damage or inconsistencies around the odometer area.
- Unexpected or irregular mileage patterns.
**What should you do?**
- Always check vehicle history reports.
- Have a trusted mechanic inspect the vehicle for signs of tampering.
- Ensure the mileage matches service records and wear-and-tear signs.
If you have a warning about odometer tampering on your vehicle, it’s a sign to proceed carefully and verify the vehicle’s true history before making any decisions.
While some genuine people sell their used vehicles fairly and honestly, others are deliberately reduce the mileage to make the vehicle look new to sell at a very high price. Mostly Land Cruiser 76, 78 and 79 series. It's happening in Port Moresby, Lae and Hagen and many other centres. To the person who is practicing this, please stop it.
