Exclusive Car Gatherings in Japan Are a Sight to Behold

When one envisions car gatherings in Japan, the mind often drifts to iconic JDM vehicles that every auto aficionado should experience at least once. However, a recent clandestine event in an unused warehouse in Chiba, Japan, took this concept to a whole new level.

Dubbed "Car Service," this exclusive, invite-only gathering was a melting pot of automotive marvels from around the globe. If you thought your local car events were impressive, you've clearly never attended one of these Japanese exclusives. The lineup featured an eclectic mix of Japanese heritage cars, European speedsters, and American powerhouses, all flaunting exceptional customizationsβ€”from AE86s (Hachi-Rokus) to classic Porsches.

The event's diversity was further accentuated by the inclusion of legendary Hondas, timeless Nissans, and even a vintage Honda Civic equipped with bicycle racks. Each corner of the venue offered attendees a fresh and thrilling experience, including the presence of retro scooters from the '70s and '80s, like the Honda Motocompoβ€”a vehicle feature that ranks among the oddest ever.

As the night unfolded, the spectacle grew with the arrival of lowriders, Impalas, El Caminos, and other one-of-a-kind vehicles. Crowd-pullers included a 2JZ-engine-swapped Hachi-Roku and a retro Corolla wagon, both sporting custom wheel setups.

But it wasn't just a nostalgia trip. The event also showcased modern marvels like the Nissan GT-R and the Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster. A variety of station wagons, including a Volvo 850 R, added to the mix.

The venue was buzzing with hydraulic displays and extraordinary builds, leaving spectators in awe of the vast array of vehicles showcased. From vintage gems to contemporary customizations, the event was a tribute to Japan's vibrant and inventive car culture.

We stop by a crazy last minute meet, tucked into the industrial areas of Chiba on a weekday night. This was easily one of the coolest meets we've had the cha...

Iconic JDM Cars Now Street-Legal in the U.S. in 2023

JDM car enthusiasts have a reason to celebrate as a series of iconic cars like the Nissan Skyline R34 and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution V have now become street-legal in the United States. This is thanks to the U.S. Import Rule, which permits the legal import of cars manufactured 25 years ago.

The first batch of Nissan Skyline R34, produced in May 1998, is now street-legal, along with a range of other JDM cars that have a significant fan base. The class of 1998 also includes legendary cars like the Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R, which was launched in January 1999.

The reason these JDM cars were previously illegal in the U.S. is due to non-compliance with certain emission control and safety laws. Additionally, JDM cars are right-hand drive, which can make navigation difficult in the U.S., where traffic is ideal for left-hand driving.

However, a loophole in car import laws has made these cars legal. If a car is proven to be older than 25 years, it can be legally imported. This means any car made in 1998 or earlier can now be legally imported into the U.S.

The class of 1998 marks a significant year for JDM cars. It was the year Nissan introduced the Skyline R34, which later led to the iconic Nissan GT-R series. Other popular JDM cars like the Honda Accord SiR were also introduced in this year, along with JDM rally legends like the Lancer Evolution 5 and Subaru Impreza.

Hyundai N Vision 74: A Glimpse into the Future of Performance Cars

The Hyundai N Vision 74 is not just another concept car. It's a fully functioning, drivable vision of the future of 21st-century performance cars, and it's totally production feasible. This is not your usual concept car mix of vaporware and unobtanium under the skin. The N Vision 74 uses hardware and technologies you'll find in Hyundai vehicles already in production.

A Tribute to the Past

The N Vision 74 celebrates a Hyundai that was never built, the 1974 Hyundai Pony Coupe concept designed by the legendary Giorgetto Giugiaro. For SangYup Lee, Hyundai's design chief, this tribute to the Pony Coupe was a deeply personal project. "I've sketched N Vision 74 ideas for years," he says. "I wanted to create a car that celebrated Hyundai's roots."

A Vision for the Future

The N Vision 74 has been built as a rolling lab for a high-performance powertrain that uses hydrogen fuel cell technology. Hyundai calls the N Vision 74 a hydrogen electric hybrid vehicle. Its powertrain uses electricity from both a hydrogen fuel cell and from a 62.4-kWh battery that can be plugged in and recharged just as in any normal electric vehicle.

For city driving or freeway cruising, the 85-kW (net) fuel cell stack provides all the electricity needed to power two motors mounted at the rear, one driving each wheel. On the track, under high-load, high-demand conditions, the battery pack provides the bulk of the power to the motors.

Production Feasible

What's perhaps most intriguing, however, is how much production or near-production hardware is used in the N Vision 74. The fuel cell stack and the two high-pressure hydrogen tanks are from the Hyundai Nexo. The electrical architecture is 800V, as in the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. The motors are similar to those that will be used in the forthcoming Ioniq 5 N.

This is the clever stuff: The N Vision 74 isn't just about building a technical showpiece; it's about building a business case. Using as much production or near-production hardware as possible would help reduce the development and manufacturing costs of a production version of the N Vision 74. And it enables the car's boosters to position it to Hyundai Motor Group senior management as a legitimate halo for the Hyundai brand.

Conclusion
"We would like to make this car as soon as possible," says Joonwoo Park, N brand management team department head. And he and his colleagues are doing their damnedest to make it happen. The Hyundai N Vision 74 is not just a concept car, it's a statement of intent, a glimpse into the future of performance cars.

The popularity of Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) cars in the United States has seen a significant rise over the past three decades. Initially, these high-performance vehicles were relatively unknown outside of Japan. However, the 1980s and 1990s saw a shift in perception, with sporty models like the Honda Prelude, Mazda RX-7, Nissan 240SX, and Toyota Supra making their way into U.S. showrooms.

The term JDM, which originally referred to cars primarily sold in Japan, has evolved to represent any high-performance Japanese model, regardless of whether it's sold exclusively in Japan or globally. The rise of magazines like Sport Compact Car and Super Street in the 1990s played a crucial role in popularizing Japanese "tuner cars" and the culture surrounding them.

The early 2000s saw the introduction of more JDM models in the U.S., including the Subaru Impreza WRX STI and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. The Honda S2000, a rear-wheel-drive sports car with a 6-speed manual transmission and 9,000 rpm redline, also contributed to the growing interest in JDM cars. The Fast and The Furious, a film heavily featuring JDM cars, further boosted their popularity.

While JDM cars may not be considered on par with European supercars, there's no denying their rising interest and market value. Classic JDM cars like the Acura Integra Type R, Honda NSX, Honda Civic, Honda S2000, Mazda RX-7, Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4, Mitsubishi Lancer Evo, Nissan 240SX, Nissan 300ZX, Nissan Skyline GT-R, Subaru Impreza WRX STI, and Toyota Supra have all left a significant mark on the automotive industry.
