White EP71 20v 4age Starlet Update:
Last year I wasn't super happy with the oil pressure so the engine came out. With help from Garage4age I put together another engine based on using blacktop pistons, silvertop rods and crank, a TRD head gasket, new oil pump gears, head overhaul and a general clean up. Also went over the gearbox before putting it all back in the car late last year.

After getting back from holidays with the family I got the engine going and completed a whole heap of other small tidy ups that Ive been meaning to get done. All the interior is now sorted and connected the android head unit to the Link ecu for live gauges. Cleaned up and rebushed the suspension arms, went over the steering rack, painted the rear bumper and side skirts in bumper black which came up great!

Have been hooning this around alot lately and its super fun to drive - potentially goes a little bit better with the extra compression so will put it back on the dyno at some stage.

For now, its getting close to where I want it to be - although its probably a bit too tidy to be a track car now. Might look at selling this in the future and then get back to the AE86 and finishing off the blue 4agte EP71 which is undergoing some upgrades.

In the mean time Im helping a mate out with a wiring loom which needs to be finished first but will hopefully update again soon.

Sheesh, its been a few months since a post but things are BUSY! I've been helping with a couple of wiring jobs and there's been some progress with the cars all of which I'll update on in the future, but its not only cars I work on so here's another side project.

This is our 1985 Liteweight Tracker caravan. We got this a few years ago from a relative and spent a year or so on a rebuild. Full chassis grit blast, repairs and paint, all new braking system, new wheels, new lights, completely refreshed the interior with all wiring (both 240v and 12v with solar), new kitchen, paint, plumbing, lights, refurbished squabs, new flooring etc etc. The outside is pretty original and keen to leave it that way.

Its done a fair few miles under our ownership and one of the jobs that wasn't actually needed but was on my wish list was replacing the draw bar. Its not that it was bad, more something to give me a bit more confidence in taking it long distance with the family on board.

Anyway, I took it into work and next thing you know the front fell off - lucky it was outside the environment (ref John Clarke). Hot glue gunned a new bar on with new coupling, 3D printed clamps for the brake hard line and LPG line etc, and it passed a wof with a clean sheet!

Currently working on a storage box to mount on the front but will update on that another time.

Merry Christmas everyone, see you in the new year!

Small project update:

I needed a new parcel tray for the white EP71 and they are unobtanium these days so made one instead.

Initially I measured and drew up a file, then cut an ACM test panel on one of the CNC machines. I got some solid aluminium rod to use for the pivot bar, and designed and 3D printed some strengthening ribs to capture the solid rod and hold it all together. This all fitted really well so cut the real version from some 3mm aluminium, printed some slightly refined ribs from CF filament that include captive nuts.

I threw this together, carpeted it, fitted some basic 6x9's I had on the shelf, and then designed and printed some simple covers for the speakers. All done and fits perfectly!

86 Update:

Now the engine is in I can start ticking off the small annoying jobs that there seems to be an endless list of. The first game was making the inlet trumpets fit as they hit the factory brake booster. I had a few schemes in mind for this including changing the angle of the quads, or printing new trumpets, but an easy solution was swapping the booster for a smaller unit. I had a second hand KE70 unit in stock so I knew it would work, but got a new unit and fit it in so now there is ample room.

Another job was sorting the fuel rail spacers (thanks Tom for the final machining on his lathe) so that's done and the rail fitted.

Fitted the coil plate and coils too, and need to decide which spark plug cover to run. Might throw some stain at the wooden one and roll that till it catches on fire...

Also have been driving the starlet a bit on occasion, much to the annoyance of my neighbours 😆

Ryan has been busy working on a customers 4efte engine rebuild. It came in needing a bit of love and has now had a top to bottom, front to back refresh to OEM spec.

The engine was stripped down, acid dipped and cleaned including every nut and bolt, removed all carbon, oil, dirt, vanish throughout. It got measured up and machined to return every aspect to within OEM factory tolerances. Decked block, decked head, honed bores, polished crank, painted block. Rebuilt head: valve re-grid, new stem seals, polished cams, reset valve clearances. Hastings rings, gaps set to factory specs. ACL mains, big ends, and thrusts with all oil clearances measured to within factory spec. New Head bolts and factory head gasket. Oil pump cleaned and checked, clearances checked. Replaced all gasket seals and O-rings throughout, GMB water pump, new cam belt kit, NOS replacement crank pulley. Cleaned and restored cam belt covers. New thermostat and seals, cleaned all coolant hoses, pipes, and galleries. New NGK spark plugs, new dizzy cap and rotor etc

This will be run with a hybrid CT9, FMIC, full exhaust and custom intake.

Progress continues on the engine for the 86:

A whole heap of plumbing and small bits needed to happen before the engine could be swapped into the car. Plumbing was the main project and I welded AN fittings to the sump for the oil drain at the back of the head, the vvti solenoid oil return line, and the turbo oil return. Once that was done the sump got a really good clean, sand, and paint. The SS works oil pickup got bolted in for good with the windage tray and the sump goo'd into place.

I made up the vvti oil feed line by using a stainless banjo fitting that feeds from the main oil gallery, then CNC machining (not) a -6an male fitting down to clear the block and welding that on before making up the line.

Fitted and wired the Garage4age trigger bracket and sensor. Modified the water lines as with going e-throttle quads the factory throttle body waxostat water feeds weren't needed. Made up a support bracket for the lines too as the 7a block is taller. Also mucked around with the fuel rail and converted that to a banjo fitting on the top rather than the -6 fitting out of the end. Few other bits and pieces like making a bracket for the vac manifold that hangs under the throttles and fitting a new dip stick and tube etc. Assembled everything then swapped it into the car!

Cars in general have been low priority over the last few years so its taken a fair few years to get to this point, but Im really happy to see the engine in the car.

Heaps of small bits and pieces to do getting everything setup in the car, then can get back to the wiring.

Bit more info on the head to the new engine in the 86.
The head itself was ported by my good mate Kris at Garage4age several years ago, then sat forgotten at his place. Originally the plan was to re-use the HKS cams that are in the current 86 engine, but I put my big boy pants on and bought up a storm from Kelfords and got a set of 193HV-T's, beehive springs, and titanium retainers. These got modified to suit use with the Garage4age 16v vvti system. There's the usual TRD headgasket in the mix along with some modified cam covers using our breather baffle plates. The head and block are now together with some plumbing to be completed then put it into the car sometime in the next few months! Can't wait! Once again, huge thanks to Kris at Garage4age - go check out his Youtube and Instagram!

Happy New Year! One of my resolutions for 2025 is to get the AE86 at least running, and a big piece of the puzzle is coming together nicely. I can't remember when exactly but a couple of years ago Kris from Garage4age and I were talking about dream engines for the car so a plan was born. After alot of R&D and work the bottom end is now together and is based on the well tested Garag4age short stroke designs but setup for turbo. A 7a block was sourced, along with a brand new crank, custom Garage4age rods, 81.5mm Carillo Pistons, ARP hardware, crank girdle, ACL main bearings, King XP big end bearings, modified and ported new oil pump with toda gears, SS Works oil pickup and various other bits and pieces. I can't thank Kris enough for his help with the build, but its now together and one step closer to a complete engine. The head is also done but more on that later, but in the mean time some photos of the build. All the best for the new year!

Another little product now for sale are custom CNC cut baffle plates for those 16v 4age owners who have changed the breather locations on their cam covers. These allow for AN fittings to be welded to either of the covers and help prevent high rpm evacuation of oil through the breathers - something that these engines are known for. Pretty easy to fit and a cheap mod really at $25nzd per plate plus any freight. Can also fit and weld on fittings if you would like.

Project Intro : 1985 EP71 Starlet 20v 4age.
I forgot I hadn't posted anything on this car so thought its about time.

I picked this up a few years ago from a mate with the intention of having it as a background build as time allowed. It came pre-fitted with a Silvertop 20v 4age, Link Storm ecu, coil over suspension, rear disc brakes, and is certified, but needed a bit of body work and alot of tidying up.

Over the next few years its had all the panel work completed, and a fresh body and enginebay respray in Toyota 038 white. Since then Ive completely rewired the body so its all late model Si spec, completely rewired the Link Storm ecu, changed to coil on plug ignition, fitted brand new coil over suspension, fitted a full Si interior and exterior, fitted 3D printed intake trumpets, and a myriad of other updates. Intention is to get it on the road again and then potentially sell it if I get a good offer so I can concentrate on the other cars.

Anyway, here's a few photos for now.
