We've encountered two messed up faulty oil filters in a single week.

The previously replaced filter had been operational for three years without being changed, and the current filter issue is on a BMW E90 330i.

Pulled this oil filter out of a 2012 Mini Cooper S during an inspection today.
The customer told me the vehicle was “recently serviced.”
This is what the oil filter looked like when it came out…
This filter is completely collapsed and saturated with old oil and debris. When a filter gets to this stage it can:
• Restrict oil flow
• Reduce engine lubrication
• Cause premature engine wear
• Lead to expensive engine damage over time
A proper service should always include replacing the oil filter, not just draining and refilling oil.
It’s a good reminder that not all services are equal.
If you’re unsure when your vehicle was last properly serviced, or you’ve just bought a car and want peace of mind, it’s always worth getting it checked

🎉 Happy New Year from Queenstown Mobile Mechanic! 🔧🚐

Thanks for keeping us flat-out in 2025 — from dead batteries in carparks, mystery warning lights, squeaky brakes, to “it was fine yesterday” breakdowns 😅

We’ll be back in the new year with:
✔️ More roadside rescues
✔️ Fewer warning lights (hopefully)
✔️ The same honest, no-nonsense mechanical help — wherever you’re stuck
Drive safe tonight, don’t push that check-engine light into 2026, and if your car doesn’t start tomorrow… you know who to call 😉

🍾 Cheers to a big 2026!

🎄 When Santa knows you’re a mechanic…
He doesn’t bring socks or chocolates — he drops off a brand-new 1KZ-TE cylinder head under the tree 🤣😍

Caught myself sitting here like a kid on Christmas morning, unwrapping engine parts instead of presents.

If your Hilux / Prado / Surf is overheating more than your in-laws this holiday season, you know who to call 🤙

🪰 The Most Expensive Fly in Queenstown 🪰

(Subaru XV – No Start Call-Out)
You won’t believe this one…

Got called out today for a Subaru XV that refused to start. It would fire for one second… then violently shut itself off, like it owed someone money.

Plugged in the scanner…
👉 60 fault codes in the ECU
👉 And more across almost every control unit

At this point I’m thinking:
“Either this car is possessed… or something unbelievably stupid is going on.”

Customer says it was “just serviced.”
Hmm… interesting timing.

Pop the airbox open and straight away something’s off —
The air filter isn’t seated properly, small gap down the side, maybe cheap aftermarket, maybe wrong size. Either way, something wasn’t filtering anything.

Removed the filter — still the same issue.

So next suspect: Mass Air Flow Sensor.
(If the engine can’t measure air, it throws a tantrum.)

Pulled the MAF out and… mate…
I genuinely had to stop and stare.

There it was.
A full-grown fly wedged perfectly between the two sensor pickups like it had checked in for a long-term stay.

One fly…
…single-handedly nuked a Subaru’s entire electrical sanity.
Created a fault list longer than my shopping list.
Shut the engine down.
Triggered chaos across the CAN network.
All because it bypassed a misaligned air filter and kamikaze’d straight into the MAF sensor.

Removed the fly.
Cleared codes.
Car: “Sweet as, bro.” Starts and runs perfect.

So yes…
Today I was defeated — and then victorious — against one airborne insect with main-character energy.

🚗💨 Moral of the story:
Cheap filters cost more than good filters. And Queenstown flies are built different.

🚐 Big Day for Queenstown Mobile Mechanic!

Started the morning with a DPF regen and boost pipe fix, then shot out to Arrowtown for an ignition coil replacement.

Back into town to pull the intake manifold off a VQ35 Elgrand, found a melted coil caused by a lean fuel mix, so I’ll be heading back to swap the fuel pump soon.

Wrapped up the day with a Subaru call-out in town — front differential’s had enough 😬

From Arrowtown to Queenstown, there’s never a dull moment keeping local cars running right.
