🪰 The Most Expensive Fly in Queenstown 🪰
(Subaru XV – No Start Call-Out)
You won’t believe this one…
Got called out today for a Subaru XV that refused to start. It would fire for one second… then violently shut itself off, like it owed someone money.
Plugged in the scanner…
👉 60 fault codes in the ECU
👉 And more across almost every control unit
At this point I’m thinking:
“Either this car is possessed… or something unbelievably stupid is going on.”
Customer says it was “just serviced.”
Hmm… interesting timing.
Pop the airbox open and straight away something’s off —
The air filter isn’t seated properly, small gap down the side, maybe cheap aftermarket, maybe wrong size. Either way, something wasn’t filtering anything.
Removed the filter — still the same issue.
So next suspect: Mass Air Flow Sensor.
(If the engine can’t measure air, it throws a tantrum.)
Pulled the MAF out and… mate…
I genuinely had to stop and stare.
There it was.
A full-grown fly wedged perfectly between the two sensor pickups like it had checked in for a long-term stay.
One fly…
…single-handedly nuked a Subaru’s entire electrical sanity.
Created a fault list longer than my shopping list.
Shut the engine down.
Triggered chaos across the CAN network.
All because it bypassed a misaligned air filter and kamikaze’d straight into the MAF sensor.
Removed the fly.
Cleared codes.
Car: “Sweet as, bro.” Starts and runs perfect.
So yes…
Today I was defeated — and then victorious — against one airborne insect with main-character energy.
🚗💨 Moral of the story:
Cheap filters cost more than good filters. And Queenstown flies are built different.
