The first question viewers of the video asked themselves was ‘How the hell did that happen?’

A second look shows a Mazda CX-5 abruptly cutting in front of the long-haul truck to make a sudden dash for the freeway exit In doing so the Mazda clips the Land Rover Defender heading down the inside of the truck.

This happened near Orlando in the US state of Florida. It results in 10 seconds of mayhem as the Land Rover Defender rolls six times before coming to rest on its wheels in an adjoining express lane.

The accident report said the driver and passengers in the Land Rover Defender were able to walk away with only minor injuries. The damage to the Defender is significant – the left windscreen pillar has been crushed and the wheels have been shattered but are still attached to the hubs.

But despite the violence of the accident the passenger cell has held up well, testimony to the Defender’s structural strength. The vehicle’s airbags have been deployed – the full curtain airbags can be seen in one photo.

The wrecked Land Rover was sold through insurance salvage for a whopping $US14,600 ($NZ25,600). One report said it was to be used by Land Rover to tell the story of how strong modern vehicles can be.

The latest-generation Land Rover Defender was awarded a five-star ANCAP safety rating when tested in 2020.
