"Fricken Laser Beams."

One of the final steps of making a set of cams is laser engraving the quality control number and Kelford Cams branding onto the camshaft itself.

This small step is extremely important as it means your products can be tracked for quality and allows any issues to be identified quickly (if they occur).

The laser engraver is also just a cool piece of kit, so was worth sharing!

Getting your cam timing right is one of the most important steps when assembling a performance engine… but just lining up the factory timing marks and hitting send won’t give you the results you want.

Camshafts are manufactured to precise specifications, but there are several factors that can affect their installed position. Timing chain or belt tolerances, gear tolerances, machining variations, head or block work and even differences in the way components are assembled can all introduce small changes to cam timing. Those small changes can have a noticeable effect on your horsepower and torque, so it’s worth taking the time to set your cam timing correctly.

The process starts by finding true Top Dead Centre (TDC) using a degree wheel and piston stop. Once TDC has been established, you can use a dial indicator to measure the actual movement of the follower and compare it to your spec card.

It’s also important to understand that cam timing isn’t just about finding a single “centreline”. Modern performance camshafts can have deliberately different opening and closing profiles on each side of the lobe. Measuring the individual valve events gives you a much more accurate picture of where the cam is actually installed and allows you to identify whether the cam is advanced, re****ed or correctly positioned.

For engines using adjustable cam gears, degreeing also gives you the ability to make precise timing adjustments rather than relying on guesswork. Advancing or retarding the cam can change where the engine makes power, how it responds and where the torque curve sits, but those adjustments should always be made from accurate measurements and with the intended camshaft specifications in mind. Going too aggressive can cause piston to valve contact, which is a quick way to kill your engine!

If you’ve made the choice to fit aftermarket cams, setting them up properly will be a no brainer as it ensures the cam will work with the rest of the engine’s components. It also works as a handy tuning tool when you make it to the dyno.

Measure it. Verify it. Then tune it.
