pport. History:
Sleepvaartbedrijf Herman Sr BV was founded in 1992 and came forth out of the family company which had been sailing the inland waters with small and large tugs, aswell as other motorised ships for years. Many tugs have been property of the family:
Japico , HeGeJo (Damen 1948), Heco (Damen 1970, 1974), Doolaard, Wiljos, Adri, Adri-D, Jodi, Herman Sr, Tarka (Damen 1996) en Herman (Damen 2002). In 1970 there was a change to coastal tugs which were deployed in the Netherlands and abroad. They were to be used for coastal and shore works, subvluvial cables, and plough dredging. Operations like: gaspipe construction at Schiermonnikoog, de Deltaworks, coastal contructions, plough and survey work for hoppers and cutters, anchorhandling for cable- and pipeconstructors. The company started as a one-man company with the tug “Herman Sr.” which was built in 1976 for H. In the years it belonged to our company it has been modified to fit to the changing needs of the market. For that reason a ploughing installation was installed as well as survey material. In 1992 this ship was introduced in the newfounded company, as it still exsists today. Due to the fact that ships became larger larger (like most hoppers, backhoe’s and cutters) the market for bigger supportships was growing inmensely. This resulted with the purchase of the in 1996 at Damen Bergum build Shoalbuster 2409 “Tarka”. This ship was the second Shoalbuster that was ever build. After this type ship proved to be a huge succes we decided in 2001 to replace the “Herman Sr.” with a brand new Shoalbuster 2208. This ship received the name “Herman”, after the father of founder and director Jack van Dodewaard. The “Herman Sr.” was sold to the English firm H&S Marine, where it still sails under it's original name and colours. On the 27th of October 2003 the “Tarka” was sold as well, this time to the German firm Bilfinger Berger AG and will be deployed in Nigeria. It will keep it's original name. The “Tarka” will be replaced in April 2004 with another Shoalbuster. This time we chose a type 2609, this will be the biggest and most powerfull boat that ever belonged to our company. It will aslo be the first 200 nm ship of our company. This will result in an expansion of our working territory.

One of the perks of having our office right next to a busy waterway: we get a front-row view of our own fleet in action.
Last week, Siskin and Teddy passed by our office on their way to Sliedrecht with a transport.

Always a proud moment to see our vessels doing what they do best.

Construction update MPV Smokey:

Herewith an update for the month of April regarding the construction of our new vessel, MPV Smokey. Despite the current situation in the Middle East, good progress is being made on the vessel’s hull. The vessel is now really starting to take shape, with several sections already completed. Please find below a selection of photos of the hull, which is currently under construction. We sincerely hope the situation improves soon and that all workers involved in the project, as well as the shipyard, remain safe.

To mark our 50th anniversary, we are proud to present our own music album: 50 Years on the Tide.
A collection of 6 maritime-inspired tracks that reflect life at sea and our company. From heavy operations on deck, stormy weather situations to the quieter moments offshore, each song captures a piece of the reality we live every day.
Last week, these tracks were brought to life during the fire show at our 50-year anniversary celebration, a moment where sound, visuals, and maritime spirit came together.

This album is more than music.
It is a tribute to our people, our vessels, and the industry we have been part of for five decades.
50 Years on the Tide is now available on Spotify and Apple Music.

Last week, we proudly celebrated our 50th anniversary at our new premises in Zwijndrecht. A milestone that marks not only half a century of operations, but also the continued growth and evolution of our company.
It was a special moment to reflect on where we started, the journey we have taken, and the strong foundations that have been built over the years. At the same time, it was an opportunity to look ahead, as we continue to develop and innovate in the years to come.
We would like to sincerely thank everyone who joined us to celebrate this occasion. Your presence, support and continued trust are truly appreciated and play an important role in everything we do.
We look back on a fantastic event and are proud to have shared this moment with so many valued clients, partners, and colleagues.

Here's a small preview of last week and the full set of photos shall be shared with everyone who attended privately by email once ready.

Every step forward starts with experience.

Before building our own Shoalbuster Herman, we operated a chartered Shoalbuster from DMS: the Knightbuster. A capable vessel, but in practice too limited in both size and power for the operations ahead.

That experience directly shaped our next step.

The Shoalbuster Herman was designed with increased power and improved onboard accommodation, creating a stronger balance between performance and operational flexibility. While smaller in size than the Shoalbuster Tarka, she was built to deliver the power required for more demanding work.

Power comparison:
Tarka: 2 × 680 HP
Herman: 2 × 720 HP

Shoalbuster Herman was ordered in 2001 and delivered in 2002, becoming our second Shoalbuster in the fleet. She replaced our very first vessel Herman Sr, marking an important step forward in the development of the company.

A vessel built on experience, designed for the next phase.

Fun fact: Herman is still sailing today under the name Afon Lligwy, operating in the fleet of Holyhead towing.
