How Car Trim Levels Affect Car Prices
Trim level simply means the version of the car and the extra features it comes with.
Think of it like buying a phone same model, but one comes with bigger storage, better camera, and extra accessories, while the other is just the basic version.
Both are the same phone, but the price is different. Cars work the same way.
Imagine you go to inspect two 2018 Toyota Camrys. Both cars are foreign used (tokunbo), both came from the US, both have clean accident-free history, both are in sharp condition, sold by one person but the prices are widely different, why?
Let me break this down with a simple example.
Take the 2018 Toyota Camry. Now, this same Camry comes in different trim levels: LE, SE, XLE and XSE. They are all 2018 Camry, but the features are not the same.
• Camry LE – This is the entry-level trim. Cloth seats, smaller rims, and just the basic features you need to drive comfortably.
• Camry SE – Sport edition. It comes with sportier rims, sharper body design, and sometimes paddle shifters for that “sporty” feel.
• Camry XLE – This one is the luxury trim. Leather seats, bigger alloy rims, push-to-start, sunroof, advanced safety features, and sometimes even cooled seats.
• Camry XSE – This one is the top-of-the-line sporty luxury. It combines the sportiness of the SE with the luxury of the XLE. So you’ll see leather seats, sunroof, premium sound system, bigger alloy rims, sport-tuned suspension and a more aggressive body design.
Now, here’s where the price difference shows. A 2018 Camry LE might go for around ₦13m in the Nigerian market, while the same year Camry XLE can push up to ₦16m or more. That’s a difference of ₦3m just because of the trim level and extra features.
So when someone says, “But I saw this same 2018 Camry cheaper elsewhere,” the right question is – which trim level?
Trim level is what makes one car look basic and another look “loaded” even though they share the same brand, year, and engine. That little detail can add serious value and change the price completely.
When buying a car, always ask about the trim level. That’s the difference between buying “just a Camry” and buying a Camry with full option.
NB: Prices used here are fictitious not factual.
