Excessive fasting can dam@ge kidney — NAFDAC warns Nigerians

The National Agency for Food and Dr¥g Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians against excessive fasting, saying it affects the kidney.

Speaking at an event in Abuja on Monday, January 23, the Director-general of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, attributed the high rate of kidney problems in Nigeria to prolonged fasting by some religious adherents.

According to her, “We are a very religious country, Muslims and Christians, we fast a lot, and it is part of the kidney problem.

Your body has to have homeomistatic balance, meaning that the water level in your body must be enough to make your organs to function.

Some people will fast for 10 or 20 days and drink only little water, the kidney is being p¥nished. Now, if you put chemicals in it, it triples in exponential manner, it dam@ges the kidney because the kidney doesn’t have water to dilute and filter.

I fast but with common sense. We have to fast with common sense, otherwise we will pay with our kidneys.”

Extend deadline for the exchange of old naira notes till July 31 — Senate urges CBN

The Senate has urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to extend the deadline for the exchange of old naira notes from the January 31 to July 31, 2023.

The apex bank had in October last year said the old naira notes would seize to be legal tender from January 31, a stance that was reiterated by its governor, Godwin Emefiele, at a meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, January 24.

However, Senator Sadiq Umar (APC, Kwara North) moved a motion on the floor of the Red Chamber on Tuesday, where he demanded an extension to July 31.

Most senators who contributed to the debate overwhelmingly embraced the extension, citing scarcity of new notes both in the banks and at the various Automated Teller Machine points across the country.

The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, put the prayers in the motion to vote and the lawmakers voted in support of the extension of the deadline from January 31 to July 31.
