PIctured here is a beautifully maintained Isuzu Invader, in Canary Yellow. The Isuzu Invader was “native” to the states of Borneo - it was assembled locally, and was the only market to carry the Invader name. This is the third generation, after which it was succeeded by the venerable Isuzu D-Max, another legend in the world of pick ups.
Known also as the Rodeo in Japan, Dragon Eyes in Thailand, and many other names given for different markets, the Invader name probably suits best its ability to invade through the unforgiving terrains of the legendary Borneo rainforest. Armed with a 2.8L and 3.1L turbodiesel and a manual transmission with 4x4 functions, the Invader remains a popular choice among locals, cementing Isuzu’s name as a tough, durable, and dependable mode of transportation especially in the remote areas of Borneo. While the Invader lacks the refinement and comfort of a modern pick up, it gets its occupants from point A to point B without hassle, even if it means crossing rivers and gruelling off-road terrains, often muddied with the tropical rains. It brought in supplies to many remote villages out of nowhere, and brought out produce, lifestock, and other items to be sold in markets and towns.
The spirit of the Invader lives on in the all new Isuzu D-Max. Pictured here is an X-Terrain version, in Valencia Orange. It comes with a more potent 3.0L common rail turbodiesel, churning out 190HP and 450Nm of torque. Add on a 6-speed auto, 4x4 capability, and a rear diff lock, and you have a serious off road capable truck. Add on a cabin worthy of a luxury sedan, and you have a truck that is refined and tame on urban roads, with loads of raw power to tackle off road excursions. Brawn and beauty, one might say.
We do live in interesting times. While all the hype these days are on BEVs, the pick up market is slowly growing as cars become more expensive and people turn to pick ups for dual usage.
If you haven’t driven a pick up truck lately, test drive the latest Isuzu D-Max at your nearest dealership today. It will change the way you view pick ups.
