The basic way to look at a compound is by its cut and gloss level. How about LSP (last step product) such as traditional Carnauba wax/paint sealant/ceramic coating? Here's my point of view:
1. Hydrophobicity
- Probably the most hyped feature. The greater the hydrophocity, the higher the water bead contact angle. Also aids in 'self-cleaning' as it traps dirts and slide off the paint easily.
2. Glossiness
- The most important feature IMO. LSP further enhances the gloss after paint correction. Traditional Carnauba wax often gives off 'warm glow' which is sought after for car show appearance. 'Head turning' is another frequently used term too.
3. Durability
- Basically, how long does it lasts. Daily-driven, long exposure to sunlight (UV) and rain, lack of proper maintenace - will significantly reduces its durability. Some can last only shortwhile (especially Carnauba-based wax), some can last extremely long up to 12 months.
4. Ease of application and removal (wipe off)
- Most LSPs are easy to apply (spray>liquid>paste), but removal can be a breeze in some and arduous in another. Typically, spray form is the easiest to wipe off (but streakiness can be harder to buff off sometimes) - thus the fastest method of sealant. Paste wax can be grueling to remove especially after it hardens (elbow grease!)
*I like liquid form, it gives off the sense of satisfaction of application and relatively easy to buff off too)
5. Smoothness/slickness
- Although it is a taboo to run your fingers over car paint, but we can't help but do it after done everything. Not sure if slickness helps prevent dust from sticking to the paint though. Generally, all LSP (especially wax) attract dust.
6. Smell
- This feature may not be important to most, but a pleasant smell is, regardless, a pleasant experience anyway. Same goes to those that smells relatively bad - not a complete turn off but still...
