We’ve got a fresh arrival off the truck from Tijuana. sent his 84 Westy down to us for restoration. Every van that arrives to us receives a complimentary thorough inspection. I always find something, often times I find a lot!

My mom says I don’t show enough “Before” photos of the vans we do. So here I am in Colorado picking up a very crusty van and driving it to Tijuana. By my estimation there’s about a hundred things wrong with this van that could make arriving to Tijuana a pipe dream, but I’m gonna go for it anyway. A coolant hose with a slit in it, a misfire at speed, leaking oil, leaking gas from the overflow tanks, a clacking CV joint. Which roadside disaster will I need to address first? Let me know in the comments below!

Rather happy with how this one turned out. We’ve had a number of White vans in a row, and I’m not complaining. White is a great color on these vans and lets you accessorize it pretty cleanly. This one got a black center stripe and we repaired the fiberglass bumpers and trim and painted them all to match.

Jon from Santa Fe bought his new to him Syncro Westy in April and the previous owner told him his first stop should be with LiveTheVanLife Restorations to redo it’s previous respray that’s bubbling up in places. Telltale sign of a place that doesn’t know Vanagons or does shoddy work is overspray on the window seals. In this case there was even overspray on the hook up boxes! Regardless, we’re going to fix up Jon’s syncro the right way, the LiveTheVanLife way! While it’s here with us it will be getting a bunch more done including upholstery, suspension work, and more. L90D paint code with a stripe seems to be our go to style recently. I think we’re on 4 vans in a row now? Probably because it’s such a nice color on a Vanagon. I used to think it was boring, but have really come to appreciate the clean look that you can then accessorize with all the other cool things we like to put on our vans. Like our Baja Bumpers for example…the best Bumpers on the market. With the best designed and strongest swing away system that will not put holes in your van or scratch the top of your hatch. This Tiico powered Syncro has lived a fun life near Lake Tahoe California, the owner uses it to drive to the ski slopes in winter so it had plenty of rust. We also applied undercoating, rebuilt the syncro transmission, new motor mounts and carriers, rear disc brakes and more. She’s ready to hit the slopes once again! ⛷️

Hundreds of hours of work to paint it in a few hours. The painting part is just the tip of the iceberg if you will, but no doubt it’s the most satisfying part. We all get excited for paint day! This Boxeer powered Westy is looking fly!

Fresh off the truck from the border and all the way from Seattle. This Orly Blue Westy is ready to begin anew. Big thanks to for the referral. Due in no small part to their fine work, I couldn’t find anything mechanically wrong with it worth noting. That happens VERY rarely. Nice job guys ✌️

Vanagons are cool (like really cool), but you know who’s cooler? Vanagon owners. It takes a certain type of person to love a vehicle so quirky, weird, and (let’s face it) often frustrating to own. I think it says a lot about somebody to love something so much and stick with it through thick and thin. Your accountant might call you foolish, but me? I admire you. When your dog gets sick do you kick it to the curb? Of course not. And guess what, the Van is at the same level as the family dog to many of us. It’s part of the family. We’re fiercely loyal, and we’ll do what it takes to keep our best friend on the road, making us memories. I find that admirable. Too many people are so quick to throw in the towel when the going gets tough, but Vanagon owners? We persevere! ✌️ Here’s to the crazy (and) awesome people out there that drive these strange and wonderful vehicles.
