🚗 Should I hire a car in Mauritius?

This is another one of the questions I’m asked most often.

My answer? Yes, I do recommend car hire if you want the freedom to explore the island at your own pace.

I drive myself here in Mauritius, but there are a few things visitors should know before getting behind the wheel…

✅ Driving is on the left, just like the UK.

✅ Roads range from excellent motorways to smaller rural roads.

✅ Be prepared for drivers travelling either very fast… or very slowly!

✅ Horns are used regularly, or maybe that’s just my driving 😉

🐕 Keep an eye out for stray dogs, particularly on quieter roads.

🐐 If you’re visiting the west coast around Tamarin, don’t be surprised if a goat decides to cross the road in front of you!

One thing that catches many visitors out is the local driving style.

In the UK, if somebody flashes their headlights, they’re often giving way.

In Mauritius, it can sometimes mean exactly the opposite – they’re letting you know they’re coming through!

I personally try to avoid driving at night unless necessary. Some vehicles have very bright lights, others have very poor lights, road lighting isn’t always great and it’s easier to spot potholes during the day.

⚠️ My biggest tip?

Always use a reputable car hire company.

Tourist rental vehicles should have a yellow front number plate. If you’re offered a vehicle with a white front number plate, that’s a privately registered vehicle and not an official tourist rental car.

Despite all of the above, I still think hiring a car is one of the best ways to discover Mauritius. Some of my favourite beaches, viewpoints, restaurants and hidden gems are found when you’re free to explore.
