The Îlot Mouchoir Rouge (Red Handkerchief Islet) is an iconic, pint-sized island located in the Grand Port bay, directly opposite the Mahébourg waterfront in southeastern Mauritius. It is instantly recognizable by its charming, single house topped with a bright red roof.
Legends Behind the Name
The unusual name of the islet comes from colorful local history:
• The Ferry Signal: In the past, someone stranded on the islet or wanting a boat ride back from the mainland would wave a red cloth or handkerchief as a visual signal to summon a local pirogue boat.
• The Romantic Tale: A more scandalous local rumor suggests the wife of an early owner used to wave a red handkerchief from the window to signal to her lover that her husband was away and the coast was clear.
History and Access
• Colonial Past: Developed around the 1860s, the islet was originally accessible on foot during exceptionally low tides. It once featured small salt pans, vegetable gardens, and summer bungalows for wealthy British colonists before a massive cyclone destroyed most structures in 1892.
• Private Property: Today, the islet is under a private state lease. A caretaker family lives there year-round to maintain the property, meaning public access or landing on the island is strictly restricted.
