A road trip in Wales. 5 days and a 5 series.
"Can I suggest you an upgrade on you booking?" said the reception at rental company." You booked a small family car ( segment C ) ,can we offer an A class instead of the Dacia" she continued. In a few seconds my temperature rose by 7 degrees. I hate these situations. At this point I didn't want to disappoint my son and so "upgraded".
Unfortunately the scooter couldn't fit through the opening of the Mercedes boot and we were back in front of the reception. They than offered a Skoda SUV for the same price which I refused and asked to go back to my original booking.
At that point the company guy went in hyper mode and found this 2 month old 5 series BMW.
The scooter fitted in the boot, my son was smiling.. so BMW it is.
We enjoyed the 500 mile drive and I believe we will surely try other saloons next time. 🙂

The Alfa Romeo bialbero or Nord engine has a lot of character and a great sound track but if not maintained well it can be equally difficult to restore and the cylinder heads are renowned to get stuck on their studs. After several failed attempts by third parties we took the challenge. I always wondered how much force do you need to apply to remove the head. Well I took my chance and built I puller to use the 30 ton jack I use on my press. And NO the head didn't move at all. The 10mm steel plates started to bend and studs started to break. It was time for plan B. Built ar home made cutter to cut a hole around the studs all the way down to the gasket. 5 hours later and 2 cans of cutting oil and head finally was off.

UNDER PRESSURE. Removing this head seized on its studs was a challenge. Fabricating a puller to apply enough force to pull the head off without damage. Despite the odd layout of the head and studs not perpendicular with the deck we successfully removed this Triumph head.

Today we returned the Austin A30 back to her owner. We started with a bare shell, we restored and serviced the suspension ,brakes,steering, electrics, and fuel system. We refurbished the engine and gearbox and reinstalled in the car. We reinstalled all glass and trim and got the car to be fully functional to deliver a complete road worthy car. The A30 is a rugged humble car from 1957. They are relatively simple yet it offered her share of challenges. These cars have gone through numerous repairs throughout the years with tools and parts that were available at the time. And perhaps no one believed it will still be around in 2026..

This moment is the one that stands out most when I look back the past year. Will focus on making more of these moments while continuing to get more classic cars back on the road. Keep following to see some projects that are due to be completed soon,🙏. And new projects that are lining up 💪. Also this year we have to finish converting our boat's Volvo 5.7 ( Chevy 350 ) to 6.2ltrs . And if all goes to plan this summer we start refurbishing the other Alfa....
