For us, it all starts with a sound understanding of the sites’ characteristics and constraints to identify what constitutes the sites’ ‘spirit’. This has given us the possibility to develop a strong expertise and track record in urban planning over the past 10 years. In its 15 years of existence, our practice has provided full architectural services in 25 leisure projects, 15 residential projects, 20 commercial projects and full urban planning services in 25 urban planning projects.

We asked our team a simple question: what's your go-to software? The answer was clear: Revit took the top spot, and for good reason. Its BIM capabilities allow us to work smarter, coordinate seamlessly across disciplines, and bring complex projects to life with precision and clarity.

But let's not forget the classic. AutoCAD remains a steadfast companion in our office!

If we say “Architecture”, what is the first thing you think about?

Maybe a building, a construction site, or a detailed plan for a house. But something people tend to forget is that Architecture also englobes urbanism.

Urbanism uses public spaces as a tool for inclusion and human connection, and addresses some of our most pressing social challenges. Placing people at the heart of the design is how we create real impactful projects. By thoroughly researching how and why people interact with a space, we can ensure that new developments truly serve the community.

We welcome Julien de Spéville as a new partner at JFA Architects, alongside Jean François Adam and Bimal Desai.

At JFA Architects, we believe the best homes are those that feel like an extension of the Mauritian landscape. We want to share a few things to keep in mind when designing:

Always think about cross-ventilation to cool the interior passively.

Create a seamless indoor-outdoor flow. Contemporary tropical living is all about dissolving the barrier between the inside and the outside.

Prioritize materials with high thermal mass (stone, concrete…) which naturally absorb heat during the day and release it as temperatures drop.

Pergolas, overhangs or brise-soleil are a must if you want large windows.

Designing with the sun path and wind patterns in mind reduces energy consumption, essential during the intense Mauritian summer.
