“Life's a beach, then you stay in one” is the idea behind the two new pop-up hotels constructed from sand in the Netherlands. The fully furnished one-room suites have been built as part of the annual sand sculpture festivals in Sneek, Friesland and Oss, Brabant. They're nested inside eight-meter-high sculptures, one modeled to resemble the Flintstones' cartoon home town of Bedrock, the other decorated with dragons, the Great Wall of China and the Terracotta Army. Naturally, these pop-up palaces have windows, electricity, running water and Wi-Fi. In just four weeks event organizers Global PowWow constructed the sculptures, which were inspired by the ice hotels in Sweden and Finland. If you are worried about how these rooms stay up we are coming to that part of headline “yeah right….” because the hotel's basic structure is made of thin walls, covered inside and out with reinforced sand to ensure it doesn't crumble. Nevertheless, this hotel was fully booked for the entire 2015. An overnight stay for two costs $168 dollars a night, and includes a personal tour of the nearby Friesland festival. Like all sandcastles, sadly, the hotels are only temporary and they'll close once the festivals end.

In the mid-sixteenth century Hicleyoshi, the so-called peasant ruler of Japan, ordered that all the swords in the nation be collected and melted down. The metal was then used, in 1586, to construct an enormous statue of Buddha. It took 50,000 artisans more than six years to build the statue, and exactly ten years after it was completed an earthquake razed it. Not a trace of this giant figure remains today.

What started out as a dream by Dave Longaberger, Founder of The Longaberger Company, has been built into a giant basket to house the entire corporate offices of the company. Dave’s dream was achieved on December 17, 1997 when the Home Office that is designed to resemble a basket finally opened for business. In 1998, The Longaberger Home Office also received a Build Ohio Award for its synthetic plaster system. The building is made of stucco over a steel structure, which helps create the look of an actual Longaberger Basket®. The Home Office continues to attract the attention of media from around the world, even as far away as Tokyo. While the exterior of the Home Office is a marvel itself, the building’s interior is truly breathtaking. A grand staircase, player piano and marble floors are just part of the beautiful décor of the building’s seven story atrium. The majority of the cherry woodwork used in the Home Office was harvested from the Longaberger Golf Club in Hanover; dried in their facilities; sawed and shaped at their Construction Woodshop; finished in their Construction Paint Booth and installed by their Construction Division.

The Waldspirale is the name of this unique building located in Darmstadt, Germany. It is translated into English as Forest Spiral which is suitable both because of the general plan of the building and the fact that it has a green roof. The complex was designed by the world famous Austrian architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser and built by the Bauverein Darmstadt company. Hundertwasser’s idea was to plan the building so that it rose up on the site in the form of an afforested spiral. The design expresses irregular, organic forms in an incomparable individualism. Spiral Forest contains 12 floors and 105 apartments, a parking garage, a kiosk as well as a café and a bar. The café is located at the top of the residence opening a breathtaking view. This building can’t be unnoticed. Among the peculiarities are irregular organization, the windows, which appear as if they are “dancing out of line”, the diagonal roof, planted with grass, shrubs, flowers and trees.

Lake Mead is the largest man-made reservoir in the world. The construction of Hoover dam occurred between 1931 and 1936, at the peak of the American great depression. It was the crowning achievement of the era consisting of 2,480,000 cubic meters of concrete and holding back the flow of the mighty Colorado River. In addition to being both a hydroelectric power source and water reservoir, Lake Mead serves a third purpose as well - as a recreational lake.
