I have today written the below to Thrifty Global Reservations and Also cc'd to the CEO of Thrifty Dollar Automative Group. So you can see what I'm saying about my experience with you, I have reproduced it here My Reservation Reference: #H33837532E4 Dear Thrifty Team I have had a terrible experience with one of you outlets, detailed in full below Kindly forward this to whoever deals with complaints. It's now Thursday 13 July. I will leave it until 21 July, next Friday, to receive a response from you and your outlet in St Kitts. If no response is forthcoming I will post the below on Trip Advisor and other travel review sites. FYI, this has also been sent to your St Kitts outlet via Facebook messenger as they do not publish an email address to write to. Proposed Trip Advisor post follows: Thrifty Car Rental- What a Disaster! There are good car rentals with great service, average car rentals where it's a utility experience, and not so great ones, which don't go to plan. But then there is a category all its own, where the experience is So BAD, that you actually walk out of the rental car office and go rent somewhere else! My experience with Thrifty in St Kitts falls into that category! This is not a car rental outfit. This is a Joke. A bad Joke! Avoid! Last Friday (7 Juily), island hopping in the Caribbean, I'd planned to rent a car to explore St Kitts and Nevis. I chose Thrifty for two reasons- (1) they're a major global brand and thus (in theory) reliable (ha!); and (2) unlike other rental agencies in St Kitts they're right at the airport, not offsite. I booked well in advance, on 21 June and got my confirmation. In fact the night before I got an automated reminder to collect my car on arrival at St Kitts. So far so good. Very smooth, very professional. However that's where professionalism stopped. Landing at St Kitts airport a little earlier than planned, I waited patiently as the window showed opening time as 12 noon. At about 12.10, the agent still had not shown up. Thrifty remained shuttered. With an Island to explore and nobody there to give me my reserved car, I was getting twitchy. I left it a further 5 minutes, and then at 12.15 I tried calling the number on the window. It was not an out of hours cellphone, but a desk phone. As I dialled I could see the phone's ringer light flashing on the desk in the still locked office. Despairing, I rang the Thrifty Call Centre. After a modestly long wait in a holding queue (incurring roaming charges on a UK phone dialling the USA from St Kitts!), Agent Bert finally answered. I explained that their branch in St Kitts was at that point 18 minutes late opening and I was awaiting my rental car. He seemed rather clueless as to what to do. It was very clear to me that Thrifty's call centre really had no plan for what to do with a situation like this...where a customer was literally stranded with no way of getting the car they'd booked weeks previously. Hugely disappointing. Then while I was still on the phone the agent in St Kitts turned up. No apology whatsoever for being late, and no clue that I had a car booked. It seemed he was surprised he had a customer at all. He said, 'so how can I help' . Well I have a car booked. He seemed unsure so I pulled out my email confirmation. Surprised, he went about some paperwork, and told me I needed to buy a driver's permit for US$24. He was entirely unaware that a visitor can drive in St Kitts according to new rules if they have a driver's permit from Antigua, which I had. Not willing to pay for a permit I didn't need I told him I had an international drivers permit too, which should be valid in St Kitts. He seemed unconvinced, went to google and then, in doubt, called someone offsite (perhaps his manager) who confirmed if it was okay. It was. So far, Thrifty had been unapologetically late opening, unaware I had a booking, unwilling to recognize I didn't need a St Kitts permit, and not sure whether the International Drivers Permit was valid. Irritating but not catastrophic. Then it got really bad! First he told me he needed to charge me for two days as I'd be keeping the car two hours into the next 24 hour period. Whilst this a normal practice at most car rental places, Thrifty's online quote was very clear- a day's charge and then US$15 per hour for upto three hours. He didn't seem to grasp this, though it was on the email confirmation I showed him. He then told me I needed to pay a sum US$70 higher than the printed quote in front of him. I said that's not possible. Look at the quote- It's $98.64 for a day plus 3 hours. Where are you getting this figure of nearly US$170?! He said well I have to charge you for a tank of gas, and if you bring back the car with the gas at the same level I'll refund it. I was like, it doesn't say that in the quote! I always fill the tank anyway, so why don't you just say I'll take it full and bring it back full like most places. He insisted that was their policy. I said, look, the problem is when you refund my card, I will be hit with exchange rate charges. He said he understood but that was the policy. I said why didn't Thrifty inform me about this when I booked. He then looked again at my printed confirmation and said the fuel is an optional extra, referring to Thrifty's little caveat at the bottom which says: Optional items must be reselected at the time of rental. The charges for the optional products and services listed above are included only for the purpose of providing you an estimated cost of the rental if you should choose to select such options. Selecting optional products and services as part of the reservation process is not intended to be a contract by Thrifty to provide you such products and services unless and until you have selected such products and services at the time of rental and have signed the rental agreement.Optional items must be reselected at the time of rental. The charges for the optional products and services listed above are included only for the purpose of providing you an estimated cost of the rental if you should choose to select such options. Selecting optional products and services as part of the reservation process is not intended to be a contract by Thrifty to provide you such products and services unless and until you have selected such products and services at the time of rental and have signed the rental agreement. This was a truly bizarre leap of logic. Clearly, unlike a car seat or GPS, a fuel deposit, enforced according to their policy, is NOT in any way an optional extra. I'm being told I HAVE to pay for the fuel and have it refunded after the fact. That is not optional. So now in addition to being late and clueless about the rental and licensing requirements, the Thrifty guy was trying to deviate from the quote provided by Thrifty, and bizarrely claiming that a fuel deposit constitutes an optional extra. I had had enough. For the first time in my well-travelled life, I abandoned a rental reservation. I immediately rented from a highly rated rental agency called Bullseye which was just off airport and came to pick me up. They charged me just for one day, giving me the extra couple of hours as grace, they recognized I could drive on my Antigua temporary permit, and on fuel it was a full in/full out policy. Where thrifty was indifferent, they were beyond courteous; Where Thrifty was trying to deviate from an agreed quote, they were flexible. Frankly I don't know why anybody would ever hire from Thrifty in St. Kitts. And it seems Thrifty will give a franchise to just anybody, so why would you trust Thrifty at any of their global locations? St Kitts is a small station, but due to my experience here I'll never rent from Thrifty again. If I was them I'd withdraw the franchise.. Regards
