HOW MANY CARS CAN GET A KDW NUMBER PLATE? EXACTLY 23,976.
Someone asked me how many KDW plates can be produced.
It is a good question, so let me break it down.
A Kenyan number plate has 3 parts.
Take KDW 001A as an example.
The first part is 3 letters, like KDW.
The second part is 3 numbers.
The third part is 1 letter at the end.
The numbers run from 001 to 999.
That gives 999 plates for each ending letter.
The ending letter runs from A to Z.
But 2 letters are never used.
There is no I and no O, because they look like 1 and 0.
So we have 24 ending letters, not 26.
Now do the maths.
999 numbers multiplied by 24 letters is 23,976.
That is how many vehicles can carry KDW.
The first one is KDW 001A.
The last one is KDW 999Z.
After that, the system moves to KDX.
The same rule applies to the third letter at the front.
There is no KDI and no KDO.
Some series are skipped completely.
KAF was left for the Kenya Air Force.
KDF was left for the Kenya Defence Forces.
So the whole KD generation had 23 series.
23 multiplied by 23,976 is 551,448 vehicles.
Look at how fast we are filling them.
KAA started in 1989.
KBA started in 2007.
KCA started in 2014.
KDA started in 2020.
KEA started this year, in 2026.
The first generation took 18 years to finish.
The last one took about 6.
