Some revolutionary ideas begin as sketches on a whiteboard. Others begin with a : the burning need to build something that proves what’s truly possible.

The Waya EMAX began as exactly that, a relentless pursuit set by our R&D team that eventually channeled its high-level engineering and precision into building the Waya Boda for the fleet space.

The central question was this: What happens when you combine raw, silent power, precision control and uncompromising off-road capability... all designed from a blank slate? The result is the : a full performance line built for extreme adventure.

From the “Baby EMAX” for young riders discovering their first trail, to the 65cc and 85cc equivalents for teenagers, all the way to our 33 kW flagship machine, each version is a testament to what happens when boundary pushing engineering and curiosity meet.

Tested across tough terrain, varied climates, steep climbs and deep drops, the EMAX became more than a product.

The precision, ruggedness, and innovation born from this project fundamentally shaped the R&D culture that defines Waya Electric today. It is the heart of our engineering identity.

R&D is only as good as what happens on the road.

That’s why our V2 converted is out in , putting theory to the test…carrying real loads, running long shifts day in, day out and proving that electric performance and everyday practicality can work together seamlessly.

The feedback from the driver says it all. No more range anxiety with over 100 km per charge, quieter rides that passengers actually prefer and far lower running costs thanks to no fuel requirement and far less maintenance.

What’s next? We’re working with our partners to develop a commercial pilot. Our R&D team is also digging into the data to see how we can continue to optimise drivetrain performance. We see fantastic product and business model innovation in the electric 3-wheeler space, and we’ll be sharing some exciting developments in the coming months.

Earlier this year we sent down our electric Tuk Tuk conversion prototype, a collaboration between Waya Electric and VBD, to test our R&D project in real-world conditions. Thanks to our partnership with Mocotuo SACCO, the team took it all across Mombasa, pushing it through heat, load, and long hours on the road.

One question kept coming up: “can the range be increased”? So we went back to the drawing board. Our R&D team rose to the challenge, refining every detail and introducing Version 2. This is powered by a dual battery system with 15kWh of combined capacity, more than doubling range to over 100kms on a single charge.

The upgraded unit heads back to Mombasa this week for more testing as we continue to gather feedback and push the limits of what’s possible.

Last week, she was part of the team that presented EMAK’s Strategic Plan to the board — focused on strengthening education, training and knowledge-sharing across Kenya’s sector.

The committee is focused on shaping the future of e-mobility education and knowledge-sharing in Kenya — from mapping out learning resources to building training platforms and hosting regional forums that grow capacity across the industry.
