Today, the Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association of Kenya (APMA), participated in a stakeholder workshop convened by the State Department for Roads, Ministry of Roads and Transport, to deliberate on the proposed Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Kenya.

APMA was represented by its Chairman, Ash*t Shah, and Board Member, Nephat Njeng'wa, who joined government and private sector stakeholders in discussions on how the BRT program can contribute to the development of Kenya’s automotive industry.

The discussions highlighted an important opportunity: using the BRT program to deepen local manufacturing and value addition within Kenya’s automotive value chain.

In late 2025, the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (NaMATA) undertook an assessment of Kenya’s potential to manufacture automotive parts and systems, build bus bodies, and assemble electric BRT buses locally. The assessment included parts manufacturers, including APMA members.
The findings are encouraging.

The Principal Secretary, State Department for Roads, Eng. Joseph Mbugua, CBS, noted the significant potential for localizing parts and raw materials such as steel, rubber, and electrical cables.

Principal Secretary, State Department for Industry, Hon Ps Dr Juma Mukhwana, PhD, CBS emphasized that increased localization in vehicle assembly will create new opportunities for local parts manufacturers. He highlighted the National Automotive Policy of 2022, the Automotive Bill, and the East African Community Assembling and Manufacturing of Products Regulations, 2025 as important policy instruments supporting the growth of the sector.

The Samurai Financing facility from Japan also presents an opportunity to catalyze investment in parts manufacturing and vehicle assembly, while supporting access to finance for consumers purchasing locally assembled vehicles.

For APMA, the message is clear:

Kenya should not only assemble vehicles. We should manufacture more of the components that go into them.

The BRT program provides an opportunity to demonstrate what this can look like in practice, from locally manufactured components and bus bodies to electric mobility technologies.

A stakeholder session will be convened at a later date to validate the NaMATA assessment report.

The question now is: how much of Kenya’s BRT investment can we turn into Kenyan manufacturing, jobs, technology and industrial capability?

Expanding beyond domestic markets is no longer optional, it is essential for the growth of Kenyan manufacturing.

While the East African Community (EAC) and COMESA have long provided valuable export opportunities, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) has opened access to a single market of approximately 1.4 billion people with a combined GDP of USD 3.4 trillion. This presents an unprecedented opportunity for Kenyan manufacturers to scale their businesses and compete across the continent.

However, market access alone is not enough. Success in regional and international trade requires a strong understanding of trade policies and compliance requirements, particularly Rules of Origin, which determine the originating status of products under preferential trade agreements and unlock tariff benefits.

Is Kenyan industry ready to seize these opportunities?

This is the objective behind the capacity-building initiatives spearheaded by the Kenya Revenue Authority, in collaboration with the World Customs Organization - Organisation Mondiale des Douanes and the Kenya Association of Manufacturers. Their recent three-day workshop equipped manufacturers with practical knowledge on Rules of Origin across key trading blocs, including the EAC, COMESA, AfCFTA, and SADC.

The Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association of Kenya-APMA was pleased to participate in this important program. The knowledge gained will strengthen our ability to support members in navigating regional and international trade and unlocking new export opportunities.

We sincerely appreciate the organizers and the excellent trainers for delivering an insightful and highly practical program. Continued investment in trade capacity building will be instrumental in developing a pool of Rules of Origin experts and enhancing the competitiveness of Kenyan manufacturers in regional and global markets.

Kenya and Japan have opened a new chapter in a longstanding partnership anchored on shared prosperity, industrial transformation, and sustainable economic growth.

Speaking during the signing ceremony of the Samurai Bond facility at State House on Monday, H.E Dr. William Samoei Ruto Ph.D, emphasized that Kenya–Japan collaboration extends beyond financing; it is a strategic partnership focused on building people through technical cooperation, skills development, training, and technology transfer.

The KES 22.1 billion mobilized under the facility will support key national development priorities, with a strong focus on advancing Kenya’s National Automotive Policy and accelerating industrial growth.

In his remarks, Cabinet Secretary, Trade, Investment and Industry. Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry, Hon. Lee Kinyanjui noted that access to capital has remained a major constraint to the expansion of Kenya’s automotive industry. The Samurai Bond financing is expected to unlock investment and provide the momentum needed to scale the sector.

The CS further underscored that policy certainty and stability are essential in attracting long-term investment into the automotive ecosystem, highlighting the forthcoming National Automotive Bill as a critical step toward creating a predictable and competitive operating environment.

The facility is expected to support automotive parts and component manufacturers to expand production capacity and increase local content to at least 40 percent. This will strengthen Kenya’s competitiveness within the East African Community and the African Continental Free Trade Area by promoting domestic value addition, reducing import dependence, and supporting sustainable industrial development.

Additionally, KES 5 billion has been allocated toward reducing energy losses across the power network. Lower technical and commercial losses will contribute to more affordable energy, a more reliable national grid, and improved competitiveness for the Kenyan industry.
