SOLUTION AGAINST E20 DRIVING HURDLES

How to Protect Pre BS VI - Phase 2 standard for safely & smoothly driving ?

If you are driving a pre- April 2023 manufactured vehicle, there are a few practical steps to mitigate these E20-related issues, especially during humid monsoon months:

■Keep the Tank Full:
Try to keep your fuel tank relatively full. Less empty space in the tank means less air, which drastically reduces the amount of condensation (and water) that can form inside.

■Inspect Seals & Caps:
Ensure the rubber gasket on your fuel cap is in perfect condition to block external rainwater ingress.

■Shorten Maintenance Windows:
Replace your fuel filter slightly more frequently (e.g., every 5,000–7,000 km) to catch any loose debris or early-stage water-ethanol sludge before it reaches the engine injectors.

■Use Fuel Additives:
Consider using a high-quality, ethanol-compatible fuel stabilizer/additive.
These help prevent phase separation by keeping the ethanol molecules evenly suspended in the petrol even in the presence of trace moisture.

■ Actual Driving Conditions
Avoid frequent gear, brake, clutch operation and try to drive in steady speed range 60 - 80 KMPH for better optimization of air - fuel mixture to reach complete combustion in IC engine to get better mileage and emission control benefits.
Remember bad road condition, under actual driving cycle with frequent operation of Brake ,Clutch and gear causing incomplete combustion resulting sticky deposition in fuel filter, fuel pump , fuel injectors, piston rings etc.

■ Ethanol is Hygroscopic in nature, therefore petrol pump dealers should have the underground fuel tank compatability with blended fuel to prevent water deposition .

Also motorists should clean the vehicle's fuel tank whenever needed.

E20 Compatibility - only BS VI Model ?

In post-April 2023 (E20-compliant) vehicles, the Engine Control Unit (ECU) and fuel injectors are calibrated to adjust fuel trim levels to offset this energy loss.

In older BS4 & BS5 model cars, the ECU's oxygen sensors often get confused by the leaner burn, sometimes triggering the "Check Engine" light or failing to optimize combustion, leading to sluggish performance.

 Material Corrosion in Non-Compliant Systems

Beyond fuel combustion, ethanol is a powerful solvent.
Vehicles built before the E20 mandate (pre-April 2023) use fuel system materials that cannot handle high-concentration alcohol.

Elastomer Degradation:
Ethanol dries out and corrodes the standard rubber hoses, fuel line seals, and O-rings used in BS4/ BS5 models. Over time, these parts swell, crack, and leak.

Clogged Injectors:
As rubber fuel lines slowly degrade from the inside out, microscopic debris flakes off and travels straight down the fuel system, clogging the fine nozzles of the fuel injectors.

Fuel Pump Failures:
Pure petrol acts as a natural lubricant for electric fuel pumps. Ethanol is a dry solvent that strips away this lubrication, causing older pumps to run hot and fail prematurely.

How to Protect Older (BS4 & BS5) Vehicles
If you are driving a pre-2023 vehicle, there are a few practical steps to mitigate these E20-related issues, especially during humid monsoon months:

Keep the Tank Full: Try to keep your fuel tank relatively full. Less empty space in the tank means less air, which drastically reduces the amount of condensation (and water) that can form inside.

Inspect Seals & Caps: Ensure the rubber gasket on your fuel cap is in perfect condition to block external rainwater ingress.

Shorten Maintenance Windows: Replace your fuel filter slightly more frequently (e.g., every 5,000–7,000 km) to catch any loose debris or early-stage water-ethanol sludge before it reaches the engine injectors.

Use Fuel Additives: Consider using a high-quality, ethanol-compatible fuel stabilizer/additive.
These help prevent phase separation by keeping the ethanol molecules evenly suspended in the petrol even in the presence of trace moisture.

Kolkata and adjoining metropolitan areas including Howrah, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas and Nadia have far fewer vehicles and industries compared to the national capital region (NCR). However, the Bengal capital remains among the most-polluted cities in India almost throughout the year. The reason behind the city being so polluted is the rampant usage of adulterated diesel by so many commercial vehicles aged beyond 15 years. Also more than 10,000 eateries on kolkata footpath are using Coal fired Chulas and Kerosene Stoves for cooking foods. Rampantly illegal constructions are going on by filling up the waterbodies around KMA and construction materials are lying uncovered on the city's pavements.

BS VI compliant smoke meters / gas annalysers are required.
But it's better to check smoke emissions of vehicles on actual driving condition by remote sensing devices on roads rather than checking on idling starting conditions of petrol/ diesel/ CNG/ LPG vehicles.

KMC is likely to float the tender this month for the purchase of 32 machines, a modified version of smoke-meters, to be used to measure air pollution
