Bengaluru's first real rain in nearly a month and a half arrived Tuesday evening, and the city felt it. Koramangala and Bommanahalli logged over 60 mm, junctions and underpasses went under water, trees came down, and the evening commute crawled. The IMD expects more rain through 18 September. The first wet evening after a long dry spell is the one that catches riders out. Weeks of dust and oil sit on the tarmac until the first shower lifts them, and every windscreen around you smears on the first sweep of the wipers. Nobody is used to looking for a bike in the rain yet.

So ride like you are harder to see than usual. Lights on before the clouds open, a steady lane position where mirrors can find you, and extra room to the car ahead instead of threading past stalled traffic at flooded stretches.

Thailand's weather office has put the whole country on notice: heavy to very heavy rain from 17 to 20 September, reaching the North and Northeast first, then the Central, East and South. Ahmedabad spent Monday under water. Around 3 inches of rain fell between morning and early afternoon, crossings and underpasses flooded, traffic slowed to a crawl, and 225 talukas across Gujarat recorded rain in the same window. IMD has placed Morbi, Surendranagar and Rajkot on red alert, with Ahmedabad and a long list of districts on orange through Tuesday, as reported by Aaj Tak.

A flooded street changes where people look. Every driver is watching the water for the next deep patch, nobody is checking mirrors, and the rider picking a line between stalled cars becomes the easiest vehicle on the road to miss.

So put yourself where eyes already are: hold your slot in the queue instead of threading the gaps, keep your lights on even at midday, and leave extra room to the vehicle ahead, because wet tarmac is slow to stop on.

Madhya Pradesh is back in the rain. The Free Press Journal reports a fresh heavy rain alert covering 15 districts from 13 to 15 September, and Bhopal has already had rain with strong winds that cut visibility and slowed traffic across the city.

Slowed traffic in rain is its own hazard for riders. When everything bunches up under a grey sky, the smallest vehicle on the road is the easiest one to lose, especially from behind.

If you are riding through it, keep your lights on, hold a steady line where mirrors can find you, and leave yourself room ahead so you never have to brake as hard as the car behind you.

A new low pressure area formed over the North Bay of Bengal this morning, and the IMD has put Mayurbhanj on red alert, with Baleshwar, Bhadrak and Kendujhar on orange. Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph are forecast across much of Odisha, and Mayurbhanj closed its schools for the day. For riders, gusty rain is a double problem. The wind shoves you around just as the spray takes your sight away.
