A magnificent male common skate was carefully caught, measured, photographed, and released alive in Tralee Bay on the 15th July 2026.
The common skate is critically endangered, making this capture all the more special. Tralee Bay is one of the very few bays in Ireland where these incredible fish are still found.
A century ago, common skate were plentiful in the bay, with stories of fish weighing over 200 lb being caught from Fenit Pier. In recent decades, however, despite dedicated efforts by anglers, captures have been extremely rare.
From a conservation perspective, skate are measured rather than weighed to minimise handling. This fish measured an incredible 181 cm by 135 cm, giving an estimated weight of 140–160 lb.
A common skate measuring over 180 cm qualifies as a specimen, making this an exceptional fish by any standard.
Congratulations to Owen Lynch on a truly historic catch and, most importantly, for ensuring this magnificent fish was released safely to swim another day.
