A question we get asked by drivers is: “My VW is due a timing belt but driving fine, do I really need to change it?”

‼️ Would you expect a timing belt to look like this after just 100,000km? ‼️

This is a timing belt we removed from a 2017 Audi A4.

It had only been replaced 100,000km ago and this is the condition we found it in. This vehicle’s recommended interval was 200,000 kms. The water pump had failed, which contaminated the belt and caused it to wear and perish prematurely.

More and more, we are seeing vehicles not reaching their recommended timing belt intervals.

⚠️Manufacturers intervals are guidelines — not guarantees⚠️

A failed timing belt can result in severe engine damage, and the cost of prevention is far less than the cost of repair.

In general we would recommend considering a belt replacement around the 100,000kms mark - especially if your vehicle is higher mileage or you’re unsure of its history.
