Hungary will soon run out of fuel, more stations introduce limits!

MOL petrol stations implemented a quantitative limit: you can only fill up with 50 litres of fuel at low-pressure pumps with Hungarian licence plates at the official price. By now, two more companies joined MOL in setting a limit.
As of Friday, you can fill up with 50 litres of fuel at official prices at MOL stations, and you can only buy fuel in cans at market prices. Previously, the partly state-owned MOL had communicated that there was no shortage of fuel, but they justified their announcement on Friday by saying that this limit could ensure service to all customers and the smooth operation of the stations.

Fuel: extraordinary demand in Hungary, shortage to come soon?

In May, 189,600,000 litres of petrol were consumed, which is more than the peak summer season of August 2019 (186,200,000 litres). By now, the 12-month rolling (current and previous 11 months’ data) Hungarian petrol consumption is massively above 2,000,000,000 litres, which is unprecedented. It is, however, inevitable that inflation and the exclusion of foreigners from the official price will reverse this momentum later in the year. For diesel, the change is even more spectacular, if possible. In March, consumption rose by almost 36 percent, followed by a 21 percent and 28.4 percent year-on-year surplus. In the 12 months ending in May, more than 4,000,000,000 litres of diesel were consumed, an unprecedented figure in Hungary.

Infringement procedure against Hungary to start due to fuel price cap

The European Commission is bringing lawsuits against Hungary at the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) for harming the rights of sexual minorities and EU news broadcasting regulations. The Commission is also launching an infringement procedure against Hungary, saying that banning the access of foreign motorists to fuel at the capped prices available for Hungarians was in violation of the EU principles of free movement and single market.

Those who refuel in this way in Hungary may receive serious punishment

Mol has to supply the domestic filling stations – but they have little capacity for this. According to the wells, the oil company can fulfill 60 out of 100 liters ordered. Thus, it may happen that one of the wells is temporarily short of one of the fuels. That is why almost every filling station now has some kind of quantitative limit regarding the amount one can refuel. There are wells where the ceiling is 50 liters, but some wells maximized the amount that can be refueled at 20-30 liters.
