The two are not the same thing.

Very often, learners are capable of much more than we give them credit for.

What they need is the right level of support at the right time.

Most instructors understand full talk-through, prompted and independent.

What I often see, though, is those levels being treated as fixed stages.

Almost as if once a learner reaches independence, they should stay there.

The reality is far more flexible than that.

A learner can be independent in one situation and require significant support in the next.

That's not a lack of progress.

It's simply a different task requiring a different level of support.

One of the things I regularly see in lessons is learners being driven away from home long after they're capable of driving themselves.

Sometimes this is because the learner genuinely isn't ready.

But often the issue isn't the learner's ability.

It's the level of support being provided.

If learners only ever drive around the same roads, the same junctions and the same roundabouts, what happens when they eventually leave that environment?

I've lost count of how many times I've heard an instructor say they've tried everything with a learner, and nothing seems to be working. They've changed the way they explain it, tried different routes, exercises, and approaches, yet the same issues keep appearing lesson after lesson.

What I've found over the years is that the answer is rarely another technique. Often, the learner has already given clues about what's going on. The challenge is spotting those clues and understanding what they mean. Sometimes we're so busy looking at the fault that we miss what's causing it.

That's one of the reasons we've developed Understanding Your Learner and Micro Refinement, alongside the Video Hub.

Don’t Make the Same Mistake This PDI Did And Many Others Have Made Too.

A few years ago, I worked with a PDI who failed their Part 3.

Afterwards, we reflected on the lesson and what had caused it to unravel.

The answer wasn’t what most people would expect.

It wasn’t a lack of knowledge. It wasn’t because they didn’t know the marking criteria.

The learner simply wasn’t confident enough with some of the basics.

Yet the lesson had moved on to something more advanced.

When the foundations aren’t secure, adding more complexity often exposes the cracks.

During our discussion afterwards, the PDI recognised this themselves. Looking back, they realised the learner wasn’t ready for the lesson topic they had chosen.

It’s a mistake I’ve seen many PDIs make over the years.

In truth, it’s not just a PDI problem. I still see ADIs and trainers making exactly the same mistake today.

I’ve gone back and watched this 5 minute 40 second video from the Hub again because the lesson in it is just as relevant now as it was when it was first recorded.

You can normally tell quite quickly when an instructor has only learned how to “deal with faults”.

Everything becomes a correction.
Everything becomes a script.
Everything becomes reactive.

But when an instructor starts to properly understand the learner, the lesson changes completely.

You start noticing uncertainty before the mistake.
You start recognising hesitation earlier.
You stop chasing faults and start understanding what is creating them.

Understanding Your Learner has now gone past 300 downloads.

Today at the conference, I lost count of how many people came over to speak to me about the course and the difference it has made to how they approach lessons.

What stood out was that the conversations were not about “new techniques” or clever ways to explain things.

They were about finally understanding why the same faults keep coming back, even after they have been covered repeatedly.

That is exactly what this course focuses on.

A lot of instructors already know how to explain things, correct faults and structure lessons. The issue is often not the instruction itself, but understanding what is actually driving the learner’s behaviour, decisions and performance underneath it all.
